Cannot access modem or Internet through router

All of a sudden today, I've run into a very weird problem. I cannot access the modem or the internet if I use a router.

I have made no changes, but suddenly both my computer and Vonage would not connect. I checked, and could not access the modem. I checked the router, and it had an address, and would reacquire one if I forced it to release/renew it's DHCP address with the modem. I reset the router, and even tried a different router. Either way, I cannot access the internet or modem.

If I connect the computer directly to the modem, then everything works.

The modem is an SB5120. The routers are a Linksys BEFSX41 (I've been using it for nearly 2 years), and an old D-Link DI-604.

Any ideas?

Re: Cannot access modem or Internet through router

Some additional info: The modem seems to be having issues, which may or may not be screwing up the router?

Re: Cannot access modem or Internet through router

Just a bit more info:

I've rebooted the modem several times, and sometimes it comes up with a clean log. I also tried using the 'reset to defaults' in the modem. NO change.

I've also reset the router to factory and reprogrammed it, and it still doesn't work. The router can't even set it's own internal time. When I enabled the router to allow ping responses, I was able to ping my IP address from my DSL backup. I could see the modem activity light blink with the pings.

I think it's a modem issue, but I don't know if it's somehow configured oddly (not passing NAT packets?) or there is something else wrong with it.

Re: Cannot access modem or Internet through router

Well, now it's working. I didn't do anything other than see the modem had good signal levels again (my upstream was bouncing between 52-56, versus a normal 50), and rebooted the modem. Now it works going through the router.

I'm still interested in any ideas on what might have been going on.

I am having the exact issue and it just started today. My wireless is dead and wired connections from router no longer work on my macbook or my wife's laptop. I switched to brand new router and it is the same. I am using linksys modem and dlink wbr 2310 wireless router.

Did you powercycle the modem after you connected the new router to it ?

Re: Cannot access modem or Internet through router

This has now happened to me for the 3rd time. The second time, I happened to hit the standby button on top of the modem to put it into and back out, and that fixed it.

This time, that didn't work. I also noticed I could ping the first DNS address, but not the second or anything else I tried. I noticed that when the computer was directly connected, the lease time was only 1 hour, and I had a totally different address (24.xxx.xxx.xxx instead of 71.xxx.xxx.xxx). That gave me an idea, so I went into the router and changed it's MAC address. After rebooting the modem and router, it now works.
