Email from godaddy server doesn't work

[ Edited ]

I have multiple email accounts from godaddy and in the past 2 days all of a sudden, I can't get emails.  www.godaddy.com doesn't load as well.  I see many threads about this.  Can you please let me know how can I resolve this (in steps as I am not a network expert)

Re: Email from godaddy server doesn't work

I am able to browse and trace to www.godaddy.com without a problem. That, plus the fact that your traces are getting beyond the Comcast hops to the site, suggests that this is more likely a Godaddy problem. You should contact them for assistance.

Re: Email from godaddy server doesn't work

Thanks for responding.  On my cell phone if I disable wifi and go through 3G, the mails work.  Same on my computer, as soon as I switch from my Comcast internet to 3G (using tethering) it works.

So basically outside Comcast, it works perfectly.

Will appreciate if you can help get to the bottom of it.  I don't mind calling GoDaddy but as I said, if it works from outside Comcast connection, not sure how would they help.

Thanks

Re: Email from godaddy server doesn't work

I can't speak to email, as I don't know what servers are involved. But since you can't access the website and I can, the most likely explanation is that Godaddy is blocking your Comcast IP. If that's what's happening, only Godaddy can tell you why.

That trace looks like this for me:

Sorry to repeat myself, but you need to contact Godaddy.

Re: Email from godaddy server doesn't work

So I got the same response from Godaddy that I expected.  Its not us its your ISP.  He asked me to traceroute and said that if I start seeing starring out, it is on Comcast side.

Seems like I as a customer is stuck between two companies that don't like each other or something...

He also indicated there may be something on my firewall that may be blocking it.  Based on this traceroute, what can we say with confidence?

That's not true in this case. The "starring" in your trace as you referred to it is occuring beyond the Comcast routing / infrastructure.

I'm gonna guess that there was a misunderstanding, because that's ridiculous.

Seems like I as a customer is stuck between two companies that don't like each other or something...

There's no indication that there's a problem between Comcast and Godaddy. Bruce can reach those Godaddy sites via Comcast, and so can I.

He also indicated there may be something on my firewall that may be blocking it.

Now it sounds like you were talking to someone at Godaddy who is either ignorant or just a BSer (if he saw one of your traceroutes).

Based on this traceroute, what can we say with confidence?

We can say that neither Comcast nor your firewall is blocking packets to those Godaddy hosts. It could be that Comcast or your firewall is blocking packets *from* those Godaddy hosts, but that's about as likely as having gremlins in your router.

traceroute to pop.where.secureserver.net (72.167.82.11), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets
...
14 * * ip-184-168-0-113.ip.secureserver.net (184.168.0.113) 116.009 ms !X

...

man traceroute

...

!X (communication administratively prohibited)

...

It sure looks like they have a problem with your Comcast IP address.

Re: Email from godaddy server doesn't work

Thanks Steve!  So I talked to Godaddy and they took some time to look at the traceroute and came back saying the second hop on traceroute shows stars which usually indicates a problem at the router.  I called Comcast again (and thankfully someone decided to troublehsoot).  He reset my model a couple of times and I as well tried based on his intructions renew the lease but I still have the same issue.  Weird thing is that all this troubleshooting time my IP hasn't changed.

How else can we force to get a different Dynamic address?  The Godaddy CSR did say that some times the IP assigned form the pool may have a low rating which may get blocked by the ISP.

I am at a point where if this does not get resolved by tomorrow, will have to give up on either Comcast or Godaddy.  Moving my multiple domains from Godaddy is going to take some time so I am afraid I may have to go back to Verizon :smileysad:  Hope the Comcast CSR responds back soon with an update on my ticket.

Thanks everyone!

More ignorance/BS. If your problem had anything to do with that router the problem would be apparent in all the subsequent hops, too. Some of the Comcast first hop routers are configured to not respond the way traceroute requires, but that has nothing to do with whether or not they're doing their primary job.

There's nothing Comcast can do about this except to contact Godaddy on your behalf.

Your IP address is tied to the MAC address of the device connected to the modem. Your router probably has the option to "clone" a MAC address, which would result in getting a different IP address.

The Godaddy CSR did say that some times the IP assigned form the pool may have a low rating which may get blocked by the ISP.

"Low rating", eh? Get blocked by whom? He couldn't check your IP address to see if it had a "low rating" at Godaddy? Hmm... does your IP address end with .255? I've seen a situation where an outfit incorrectly thought that users shouldn't have an address ending with .255, and blocked packets from such addresses.

Well, good luck! Keep in mind that this could be about you doing something that they don't like for some reason, thereby causing the block. If that's what it's about, getting a new Comcast IP address or a new ISP won't be a permanent fix.

Re: Email from godaddy server doesn't work

No the IP ends in 170.  This is my work email and more than one email accounts.  I doubt that I am doing something funky.

Where would be the option to clone the MAC address?  I tried looking up in my route http://10.0.0.1/ but couldn't find it

Beats me. Routers that use 10.x.x.x are like a foreign country to me. But I'd bet that if you posted the exact model of your router someone here would know how to answer that question.

Re: Email from godaddy server doesn't work

Please see http://forums.comcast.com/t5/Home-Networking-Router-WiFi/ARRIS-TG862/m-p/1291493#M41363. For this reason and many others, the TG862 is a dog (take a minute or two to search the forums). Best to have it placed in bridge mode and add your own wireless router.

Better yet, if you don't have Comcast's phone service, buy your own modem and router and say goodbye to Comcast's junk.

Either of those will cause a different IP address to be assigned.

Turns out that this IP was in fact blocked by Godaddy for security concerns!  I am back online now :smileyhappy:
