How do you check the upload/download speed?

I got the email today saying I was getting double the speed. How do I go about checking whether or not I actually got it? Is there a program or a site that tests the connection and gives you the speeds? Thanks

Re: How do you check the upload/download speed?

Try this:

http://www.dslreports.com/stest?more=1

Select the test closest to where you are there about 212 or so on this page... Or you can select one of the main 3 at the top. All or pretty reliable..

Or you can try here:

http://www.pcpitstop.com

click on the internet connection link and test there...

Well...firstly speed tests can be very inaccurate at times because there may well be network congestion between you and the server...go back to here...

http://www.dslreports.com/stest?more=1

scroll down to the bottom of the page and find the listings under USA...then look for several that may be close to you and run those...and run them several times...

Re: How do you check the upload/download speed?

If everythings right.. your test should look something like this for the text portion:
2003-12-18 10:50:56 EST: 3150 / 244
Your download speed : 3150677 bps, or 3150 kbps.
A 384.6 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 244498 bps, or 244 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!

If it doesn't go here run the tweak test and follow the instructions if there are problems...
http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks

Or you may have a signal problem... Since I do not know what type of modem you have it's hard to make a reccomendation of how you should check that.
For most modems you should be able to check at
http://192.168.100.1

but some modems won't work there.

It also depends on how computer savvy you are so let us know where you stand and folks will help if they can.

I just ran the test again and my results did look the way you said they should look. So I guess my connection is up to par now? Thanks for the replies.
