No DHCP Server found

I was wondering if anyone else had this problem. I tried to access the web but could not. I rebooted just to be on the safe side. Then I checked my IP and it was ALL zeros. I then attempted to get a new ip and it would not let me. I just would never connect to the DHCP server to get a new IP. This means that I CANNOT access the internet or anything else.

Any help would be appreciated.

BTW I am in Salem, OR

Re: No DHCP Server found

What you initially observed when all the ip were zero's is correct. Our DHCP servers will handout an ip address. This will hold true if you are directly connected to our cable modem. If you have another device between our cable modem and your computer, I would suggest that you check the settings to ensure DHCP is turned on. If you assign an ip address to your computer you will not be able to log on to the internet via comcast.

If you are running Windows 98 through XP you can view the ip address that has been assigned to you from comcast. Click on start-run and type cmd, a DOS prompt will appear, type ipconfig and hit enter. The following output will dispaly your comcast assigned ip address.

Re: No DHCP Server found

A small correction: cmd won't work with Win98. You'll have to type command. Also, I've seen several Win98 machines that wouldn't recognize ipconfig. For these machines, just type winipcfg, either from the Run prompt or a command prompt. (FWIW, Win95 machines won't recognize ipconfig at all...you have to use winipcfg.)

As for the IP address problem, if you try to renew your IP address, do you get a specific error, or just the "DHCP Server unavailable" error?

A Bit more information would help....

-What operating system are you using?
-What kind of cable modem are you using?
-Have you tried rebooting the cable modem?

Re: No DHCP Server found

It is backup now. It was down for a couple hours as far as I can tell.
I had restarted the modem and also the router that I use. I also bypassed the router and connected directly to the modem. It finally renewed after about two hours of screwing with it. I am just guessing that there was an issue with one of your DHCP servers at that moment in time.

Re: No DHCP Server found

I've been having severe connections problems since June 9 and after nearly 30 calls to tech support, an onsite tech and 2 new modems I'm still having problems. I did find out that most of the problems stemmed from some major equipment changes they made here in Salt Lake City (although none of the phone techs were aware of that ???)

Since yesterday morning, I've had better luck connecting but the connection will only last for a while (15 mins to 3 hours) then it just drops. I attempt to renew my ip (Win2kPro) and No DHCP server. I try recycling the modem then renewing--No DHCP server.

Then I reboot and recycle modem and I'm back online--for awhile until the connection gets dropped. Then I have to reboot again to get back online.

I don't know why this is happening? I've had no problems previous to the equipment changes since the service was installed last October.

Any clues what's going on?

Re: No DHCP Server found

I'm having the same issue. Everything was fine 4 one day then nothing workd including the lan. After resetting the modem the lan works but my computers thru the wireless SMC 2804WBR router gets the 0.0.0.0 thru DHCP
& manually setting the Ip adrs doesnt work at all.
Comcast told me it was a SMC issue & SMC says it's a Comcast issue. I'v removed & reinstalld the adapters & router plus reinstalld allsoftware - reset my mdem & router 15 times so far. Eithr way I can not use any computers othr than the one with the lan hookup. I got cable hookup with only one modem as the installer sd they no longr hookup to e houses here (jax) then yesterday my neighbor across the street got his hookd up in his ehouse thru his OnQ box so I not only got the wrong info apparently but also have a setup that only one computer can use as hardwiring is an issue here thats y I got the wireless setup.
Help if you can

Re: No DHCP Server found

In response to the first Comcaster, you really have to find what is dropping connection. Is it your modem, or your computer? If it is your modem, (you can simply tell that by your lights going out when you loose connection) then Comcast will have to address problem. If your computer is loosing connection, you have some serious computer issues, and as good as Comcast techs are, I wouldnt rely on anyone to fix that level of problem but the computer owner.

In response to the second gentleman, a router is a very powerful piece of equipment that has much more funtionality then the common residential user utilizes. However, with this functionality comes great necessity for knowledge about the product. Comcast doesnt support it, so dont bother calling them if you have it hooked up. The manufacturer should support it, but I wouldnt be surprised if they couldnt fix every issue. I have one, and I use it for some pretty complex stuff. Ill be the first to admit its complex at times, but that just may be a mountain your going to have to climb.

Re: No DHCP Server found

Well after numerous hours with SMC yesterday they finally agreed that the router was defective. Today I replaced it. After installing the new router then loading the newest firmware - resetting the 3 pcs (abt 20 mins total) everything works fine.
