What level DOCSIS modem is needed

I need a new modem. How do I know what level DOCSIS I'm supposed to buy? Does it depend on my area?

You want a DOCSIS 3 (D3) modem. You don't actually need it for the lower speed tiers, but you will be future proof and it may have some other benefits for you as well.
