I'm a new Comcast Internet subscriber. Earlier this week comcast installed a xFinity Arris T862 router\modem.
Why does it need a battery? Sometimes, I'm not home for extened periods before leaving I unplug most everything. Can i remove the battery from the T862? Why waste energy charging it?
My old LinkSys I just removed the power cord at night and before traveling.

Reading the online manual I see the battery is for VOIP which i don't yet have.

Yep, telephony modems have a battery back-up. If you don't have digital voice, you can just take it out. Frankly, as far as I can tell, the whole battery thing is just for marketing. If the power goes down, your cable will probably go down too and you would have to have a corded phone that draws its power from the phone line for it to work anyhow.

How about the strand (pole) mounted battery backups, the portable field generators that can be trucked in, and the emergency power backup generators at the headend ?

Eh, it's all kind of hit and miss in my experience.

At least Comcast has battery backup in the field unlike Mediacom. No batteries for them.

If I don't see a battery backup on the pole I assume my cable power isn't backed up.
I'll remove the internal battery.
The battery cover has the following message on it:
"After battery installation, do not remove battery unless instructed by comcast.
To reset this device use the reset button"
The mfg's manual has no warning about removing the battery:

Is it routine for Comcast to truck in emergency power? I've never seen it in my neighborhood.

Yes, when I worked for Comcast we had a number of back up generators. The battery back-ups we had were only good for a few hours, so once in awhile we would roll the generators out. The generators got stolen all the time, despite being chained to the pole. That was awesome.
