In my area comcast just doubled my internet blast speed to 50mbs. question is do I need to have a new docsis 3 emta modem to realize that speed increase? I have an arris tm502g and last I checked I was getting speeds comparable to a docsis 3 modem.
thanks

Lucky you! Yes you need a Docsis 3.....

You absolutely do want a Docsis 3.0 modem or eMTA.
2 ways to do this:
1. Have Comcast swap you a D3 eMTA, such as an Arris TM722G
2. Optionally, you could keep your current eMTA, and add a separate D3 cable modem, as long as splitting the signal does not degrade your connection too much.

i have an emta modem, but do I NEED a docsis 3 modem to realize these new speeds? If I do why would comcast not tell me that or is that an obvious stupid question

Comcast may well yet contact you about this...too soon to tell.
However, if you want to see 50Mbps down, you need Docsis 3.0.

Comcast already recommend a D3 for Blast 25/4 and up, D3 has more downstream and upstream channels....
You NEED it...!![]()

FWIW, a DOCSIS 2 modem with a single QAM 256, 6.4 MHz wide downstream carrier can only provide a real world bandwidth of approx 38.1 Mbps.
