I just got a new laptop and I tried to set up comcast but it won't work. I can't remember how I did it last time, but I do remember that it took me hours and then it ended up being something simple that I wasn't doing, or that it did by itself.
I plugged in the cable cord to my new computer and... had no idea where to go from there. So I took the installation software from my old computer and put it on the new one, and it keeps saying it can't connect during the installation process.
The computer reads it as an 'unknown connection' and won't connect it to the internet. Any ideas?

You don't need the software. All you need to do is to powercycle the modem when connecting a different device directly to it.
If you have Comcast's CDV service with a telephony type modem that has a battery backup, you need to use the recessed reset button on the rear instead of un-plugging it from the A.C. power source in order to properly powercycle it.
