Hello, I'm currently using a Linksys Wireless-G 2.4g router on my desktop. I've never had any slow connection issues before but now I'm getting crazy high pings in online gaming, and very slow load times on the internet. The other PC in my house is having the same problem. Heres some info to see if anyone can offer me a solution.

My speedtest.net results only are poor as well, only getting 2.1 MBPS download speed and my connection gets an F from pingtest.net.
I've never had a speed problem before with the current router I'm using. Might I have a problem with the Comcast connection? I should note that on my digital cable there is some "lag" time on the cable guide when I push the page-down or page-up key. Thanks for the help.

karishma......
Can you check the diagnostic on your modem (usually http://192.168.100.1)?
If so, it will give you up/downstream power levels and SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) figures..
Post them here so the "gurus" can take a look...
Good luck!

If EG's suggestion fixes the problem (which I think it probably will, given the high pings to your router) I'd try powercycling the router (you should just power it down before you disconnect it from the modem). Once you have tested the connectivity by connecting a PC directly to the modem, put the router back in and powercycle/reset the modem, then power on the router, and see if things are better.
Are the ping times to the router high from all the PCs on your network? If so, that would probably rule out a cable problem.

Heres the traceroute to google. I dont actually have a cord long enough to reach my modem from my desktop, and my desktop is massive although I could do it if you really think that would help. I did the traceroute twice.

I'll try to reset the modem too. In response to a previous suggestion, I can find the diagnostic button on my router but can't seem to find any of the noise ratios or up/down power levels? Any clue where those might be? I have a Linksys Wireless G router.

I would say start with just rebooting the router. If you're getting 3 second ping times to your router... there's some kind of issue with the router processing packets.
If this doesnt resolve the issue, we should investigate the LAN cabling and/or replace/remove the router for testing purposes.
I would not troubleshoot your Internet connection until the horrible ping times to your local router are resolved.
EDIT: Did you add any new network items to your LAN lately? This almost looks like it could be a duplicate IP issue. I'd reccomend firing up Wireshark and seeing if you can see anything out of the ordinary (duplicate IP messages, etc).

Ok so its defiantly a router problem. I finally found a cord long enough to directly connect to the modem and I'm back to getting blazing fast speeds online. Maybe I should look into getting a new router?

Before you get a new router
- check for competing IP addresses for the devices you have connected now (as AlisMan noted above)
- check whether the router has up-to-date firmware (go to the manufacturer's web site)

Also, did you re-boot as was suggested and try re-setting it back to factory defaults using the recessed reset button on the rear ? And are you certain that the problem is not with the ethernet cable that was being used ? Six months ago I had a Linksys WRT54G that was six years old start having the same symptoms as yours and I had to retire it.
