Will NHL Center Ice be available in HD this year? IF not I do not plan to subscribe - it was only available in analog last year and it was terrible.
09-14-2011 10:05 AM
Has anyone ever had the NHL Center Ice package? This is my first year with Comcast and was told there is only one HD channel to watch a game and the rest are standard channels. The team I watch broadcasts their games in HD. Will I also receive my game in HD? How does Comast choose which game(s) will be shown on the HD channel? Or am I just misinformed? Would appreciate the feed back. Thanks.

I'm equally curious - if it's not I may switch to DirecTV who shows any original HD broadcast in HD.

Hi, sorry I just seen your post. We have had NHL Center Ice for 3-4 years now. That is the only way we can watch the Red Wings, We got them on 681HD, 124, Versus, and I think one other channel. You can call Comcast, and they will tell you which chanels you get ( I don't know where you are) you also have to get another set of channels I think that is 124. I hope this helped you a little.

Does anyone know when Center Ice will become available to subscribe this year and how to do it?
09-23-2011 12:03 PM
I exchanged emails with someone in the Capitals organization about this very subject - the short answer seemed to be that things would not be significantly different in 2011 than they were in 2010 (a few HD channels on Center Ice, but most SD). The reason seemed to come down to money - apparently neither the cable companies nor the NHL are ready to commit to the equipment and bandwidth costs that would be required to offer more games in HD. In the specific case of the Capitals, I was told that an HD feed is always available for all home games, however it's usually not picked up by Center Ice - only the mainstream channels like Versus, NBC, NHL channel, etc. Fine if you live in the DC area and can get the games on local channels that pick up the HD feed, not fine if you have to rely on Center Ice out of market.
So I guess the best thing to do is for us as consumers to find a constructive way to lobby Comcast and the NHL - to find the right people in both organizations (I have not yet begun trying to do that). I'd be willing to pay a little extra to get HD hockey, over and above the current Center Ice rate, and if enough people say something similar, that might be enough to get the bean counters over the hump.

Just spoke to someone at comcast (9/24/11). I live in the Washington, DC area, and there will be NO high definition games on Center Ice here.
I find this completely ridiculous. It's 2011. HD games have been available for years, but Comcast is still behind the times. It especially annoys me when they claim they're upgrading their HD offerings and provide more HD coverage than anyone else. It strikes me as a lie.
If I had any other option besides Comcast, I'd drop them immediately, no matter what the cost. Comcast is a lousy product that gets by because they have a monopoly, and I hate that I'm stuck with them.

I know dish network is doing center ice in hd, at least for the Detroit games

Are you guys kidding? No HD for CenterIce? I just came from DirecTV and all the games were HD. I think I made a mistake......

If it helps here is my chat.
09-28-2011 08:25 PM
well I can guarantee those channels did not broadcast in HD last year, and NHL Network is currently not broadcasting in HD. And so I've already made the switch (this week) to DirecTV
09-28-2011 11:25 PM
NHL channel has been in HD here for a while, along with the NBA, MLB, and NFL. MLB Extra Innings and NHL Center Ice have been SD only in this area.

I'm in Southwest FL and NHL network is not HD (739)
10-06-2011 06:24 PM
Does anyone know if they plan to extend the HD channel availability in MA? My guide still only shows one HD channel. I really wanted to purchase Center Ice this year, but it isn't worth it with one HD channel.
10-07-2011 11:14 AM
Except that channels 771-84 are not HD. Only 789 and 790 are, and Comcast does not rebroadcast HD games to all markets. It's pretty arbitrary which ones they show, actually, and none of their reps seem to know how they decide which ones to show.
If you go to inDemand's website (www.indemand.com), you can see a full listing of the HD schedule. I'd go there, then call Comcast and complain when the games indemand says are on GameHD1 and GameHD2 are not passed on to Comcast customers.

I am a casual NHL fan and was about to purchase NHL Center Ice until I discovered it is not in HD.

I was just on the verge of watching more NHL this season, however, the lack of HD games on Center Ice and NHLNET not in HD will greatly hinder that plan. Also, I've been back with Comcast for about 6 months and I think I'll be switching next summer.
10-08-2011 01:06 AM
I am in Oregon and we get the NHL Network and one Center Ice channel (GAMED) in HD. There are about 13 Center Ice channels (GAME01 thru GAME13) in all (I think a few share with baseball but it's hardly ever a problem), but all except one are SD, and the quality is pretty bad. And of course the Devils never, ever, ever are on the HD channel except when the other team's broadcast is being used. I have literally never seen a Devils home broadcast in HD.
10-08-2011 01:10 AM
Versus, NHL Network, NBC and one Center Ice game channel are in HD. The other ~12 Center Ice game channels are in SD. You will not usually see your team in HD. Unless you're a Red Wings or Penguins fan, and then your team is on the HD channels a good 50% of the time. (Bitter Devils fan here)
10-08-2011 02:47 AM
I understand it's never in good taste to complain about something thats free but come on comcast. ARE YOU GONNA GIVE ME THE NHL CENTER FREE PREVIEW OR NOT?

This. I am extremley disappointed that their is only one HD channel with Center Ice. I thought I had heard that Comcast would be adding more HD channels to Center Ice this year, but as of right now they haven't around here. That is a deal breaker for me, as SD channels look pretty bad on HDTV's.
10-08-2011 03:29 PM
Comcast is light years behind their competitors when it comes to hd and digital, I've seen some supposedly hd channels that were awful in some homes. Satellite has the best when it comes to center ice that I've seen, dish network if it's in hd anywhere is available in hd, and if I pay that amount I should get every televised game as if I lived in that town. You'd think comcast would promote the NHL more since they have a stake in it with the Flyers
10-13-2011 11:18 AM
NHL network has both an SD and an HD channel with Comcast, although not in the most basic channel packages - I just upgraded my cable to their Digital Preferred yesterday, primarily to get NHL net in HD. So at least there is that. Still not too thrilled with the idea of paying more on top of that for CenterIce to get the rest of the games mostly in SD.
10-14-2011 02:01 PM
All,
Sorry about the confusion. HD Channels may not be available in all areas.
The GAMEHD and GAMEHD2 channels will offer HD games throughout the season for the NHL Center Ice package.
If you would like to know specifics for your area please let me know and I can look into this for you.

I live in MA, where currently only 1 HD channel is being utilized for the Center Ice Package (635) At the very least I feel GameHD2 should be offered, and to be honest for $170, more HD channels should be freed up for the purpose of at least keeping up with your competition. One thought: With the NBA probably on the verge on cancelling their season, could you use TEAMHD (612) as a HD option for hockey?
10-21-2011 08:51 PM
My channel guide shows two HD channels for center ice an HD1 and HD2, but only the HD1 has been working. Does anyone know why the second HD channel is not working? thanks
10-21-2011 09:46 PM
I live in Bellingham, WA. I'm getting HD channel 456, but my channel guide suggests HD games should be on 455 as well. When will those broadcasts be available?

I am in MA as well, and this is exactly how I feel. To me, it is just not worth the price for one HD channel. I am very disappointed as I was looking forward to signing up this year.

We are subscribed to Center Ice through Comcast. During the preview we were getting games on GAMEHD (GAMED), but not on GAMEHD2 (GAME2). Now we are not getting games on either channel. How should we get this corrected? We're in zip code 61802.

Hello, everyone. I recevied the following email from a customer service executive here in my local area. She thinks we'll have two HD channels by Nov 1.
Supervisor, Executive Customer Care (Seattle Market)
Comcast is currently in contact with iNDEMAND due to contractual issues. The latest information we have been given is that this should be cleared up by November 1st so that customers will be able to watch both 455 and 458 if there are games available in HD.
If I may be of further assistance you may contact me by phone or email.
Sincerely,
Agatha Z. Hill

I think it pathetic that you have to beg to get two HD games a night when they should ALL be available.
Comcast seems to be using the old ploy of not giving you any to start so you'll be happy with two later.
Here in Jupiter Fl, zip 33478 we don't get ANY HD games. It's embarrassing......
We should have ALL games, repeat ALL GAMES, in HD for the price we pay. The NHL should demand that their games be carried in HD when available. It hurts their product when not broadcast in HD. Bettman does it again......

Keisha - thanks for the replies. There seem to be 2 distinct issues here in this thread 1 - people who should be seeing the HD content currently offered by Comcast via inDemand, and are not, for whatever reason. 1a - HD means 720p, 1080i/p. NOT 480p, and definitely not 480p that looks like it's coming from the 80s (fuzzy). 2 - why so little (0-2 games daily, max) of NHL Center Ice channels are available in HD. . Those of us on the forum who fall into problem #1 are rightfully upset with not being able to receive what other Comcast customers can. Same holds for #2 but there it's more an issue of being dissatisfied with what Comcast is current offering, than feeling that you are not living up to your advertised standard. From what I've been told by a representative from within the Capitals organization, and also partly relaying communication to them from the NHL, the fundamental reason why so few of the Center Ice channels are HD comes down to insufficient investment on the part of Comcast in the necessary infrastructure to receive and pass on more of the HD feeds that already exist. (Some culpability to the NHL also but there I was told that is more in the satellite TV space with the league choosing not to try to rent the needed bandwidth for more HD, possibly the satellite providers also).
I bought a proper wide aspect 1080p flat panel TV this fall (finally) and was hoping that Comcast would have improved over last year's Center Ice HD service, which I purchased. So far it appears to be exactly the same as last year, and not what I would consider adequate. I'm finding it very hard to justify spending the extra money to continue to pay for what I consider to be an inadequate programming option. As of now I have not purchased NHL Center Ice (although I did upgrade my service to a package that shows NHL Channel, both SD and HD channels - and the games there are 1080i). Right now I'm inclined to make a statement and vote with my wallet and opt out of Center Ice this season and in the future, until at the very minimum Comcast makes some demonstrable progress towards improving the NHL HD programming options, and by that I mean showing more than 1-2 Center Ice channels in HD, and by HD I mean at least a 720p feed with matching content. Not what appears to be lower res content "upconverted" to the 720p signal, as some of the Center Ice "HD" channels now appear to be doing.
I'd prefer not to take this drastic a step, but aside from some polite phone calls promising to pass the matter on to your programming people, I've seen no progress. And while I didn't really expect all of Center Ice to flip over to HD right away, I am going to have to ask for some sort of demonstrable progress. So I'm going to vote with my wallet until Comcast starts taking action to improve their NHL programming product. As soon as we see either better programming or at least some sort of statement or plan to provide this, I'll have to stay on the sidelines. I'll be more than willing to jump back in once Comcast does something tangible to improve the situation. Will be happy to pay more above and beyond the current Center Ice rate if that's what it takes to get to having more NHL HD content.

"Will be happy to pay more above and beyond the current Center Ice rate if that's what it takes to get to having more NHL HD content."
No disrespect intended as I understand what you mean in theory and I mirror your enthusiasm for the NHL but.........
NEVER, EVER TELL A COMPANY THIS!
This gives them the giggles like school girls when they hear they can charge us more. You are already paying more than you should for a product that is inferior to the competitions. Why would you pay more to get what you should already have?
Come on Comcast! Live up to your advertising, CUSTOMER SATISFACTION!
10-28-2011 03:57 PM
I don't agree - right now I'm paying *less* than I did last year. They lose that NHL Center Ice revenue stream from me entirely until they improve their product. They seem to need an inducement to make the infrastructure investment to carry more HD channels, so this is it - both stick now, and promise of carrot later.
10-30-2011 08:32 PM
Heres a question: Right now the Anaheim-Columbus game is supposed to be on my 1 HD channel (635 in my area), and it is not. This happens to about 3 out of every 5 HD games scheduled to be on this channel over the past few years, adding to the overall frustration with this package. Mind you it is not a local blackout issue. I understand that issue and I am in the Boston market. If they know they can't broadcast a certain game to the 1 channel, couldn't they switch it out for 1 that is being broadcast in HD? After watching highlights of other games on the NHL Network I know that about 95% of the games are being broadcast in HD. Thinking I made a mistake this year in ordering the package again. Unless things change I won't be ordering this again next October, you got me this year, and shame on me, but things truly need to change for next year.

I switched to DirecTV just a couple of weeks ago for the same reason. I was already annoyed at only having 2 HD channels, and then had contacted customer support multiple times about the fact that GAMEHD2 was not showing anything but a black screen!
After a week or two of a runaround on that topic, I gave up and cancelled my Comcast TV service and switched. I'm now enjoying almost every game in HD from DirecTV, including home and away HD feeds for many games. Highly recommended.
Let me know if anyone wants any more info or a referral when you switch to DirecTV to enjoy hockey the way it should be, and where it is treated like a first-class sports package instead of a 3rd rate thing that nobody seems to care about!

so whats the deal with this? I live in NJ and i dont even get the Game HD and game HD2 evryone is talking about, it doesnt even show these channels in my lineup. Talking to customer serivce is pointless, Im not going down that road anymore. All these games should be in HD for the price we pay.
11-05-2011 08:44 PM
Frustrating isn't it? One of things I've learned from reading forums like this as well as avsforum.com is that the the Customer Service Representatives (CSR's) are usually the last ones to find out any channel information, and are basically a waste of time when it comes to questions regarding channels, etc. I was hoping to get a little more information from this site from comcast workers, but it looks like they have the same constraints on them as well. Usually the response is that the issue has been escalated to someone else. The best thing to do is look at what you want from TV (sports, movies, etc.) weigh your options with the competition and make informed decisions from there. As i posted earlier on this topic, they got me this year, but next year, if things don't change, they will not get me again.

S0A00 indicates a signal issue to your box. Please call Comcast support and they will need to send out a tech to troubleshoot your signal issue.
Your issue is most likely very close to your home and can be a damaged drop cable, loose / corroded / wet fittings or other issues with the coax distribution system. it can be inside with excessive splitting, damaged coax, loose fittings or similar issues with the coax.
Insist on a tech visit, as it will not fix itself, only a on site tech can troubleshoot the cause of the signal issue.
