I have recently been getting black spaces on the top and bottom of my screen. This happens on some channels not all. Tech says it's because some channels have switched to wide screen. Does anyone know of a way to work around this or is there another explanation? It's not the tv, it happens on all three. Thanks

The only workaround is to have a HDTV, a HD cable box, and tune to the HD channel version.
Watching or tuning the std def channel will get you the black bands since many channels have quit broadcasting 4x3 formatted channels and has gone to 16x9 for everything.

The TV remote that came with your TV should have a button maybe called WIDE . Pressing this button allows you to change the black spaces to some degree . The choices are NORMAL , FULL , WIDE , WIDE ZOOM on our SONY TV . Your TV may call these choices different names . Check you TV owners manual .

And when you use most of them you will be getting a distorted picture (but more of your screen will be filled in) if indeed that's what you want. As noted above to get correctly filled screen you need to be hooked up with HD, watching and HD channel, that is broadcasting in HD..
