I emailed comcast several weeks ago, and got several "reasons" for why they don't have Fox Soccer and GolTV up in HD.
First, they stated the only a small minority of households have HD or HD capable televisions.
According to the electronics industry, more than 150,000,000 HD and HD capable televisions have een sold in the US in the last five years(not including the first 6 months of 2011). By my calculations, that's at least one HD TV for every two people in the country, so the "small minority" argument, doesn't hold much water.
Also, I was told that there is limited bandwidth. A valid argument, but but as we more than 100 channels that are broadcast in both HD and SD feeds, couldn't comcast have a set top converter that would down convert HD for the real minority which do no have HD, and better utilize the bandwidth?
Also, when I asked why the tennis channel is in HD, but no soccer, the response was, that the tennis Channel was probably offered to Comcast and no charge. Evidently, filling their bandwidth is more important than providing their customers with programming they want. I did explain that soccer is by far the most watched sport, in the world, and that the Gold Cup final, although broadcast on subscription tier and Hispanic channels, most of which comcast doesn't offer in HD, had higher viewership than Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
They just don't get it.
Also, why not make shopping channels a subscription tier? The folks that watch them
Will obviously pay for them!
