Couple weeks ago comcast email starting opening in a new page(window, tab) then after you read your mail you now have to close out the new window abd then refresh your home page to clear the mail. This is #@#%, through multiple times of trying to deal with customer service and geting no where, I foiund my only option is to change internet service. For comcast support let me tell you how IT USED TO WORK, when on your home page and you click your email it opens up with the same window then when your through you press the home page tab and it switches back to xfinity homepage and the mail is cleared. What ever changes were made suck every comcast tab now opens in a new window. Been a comcast customer for over 25 years till today, tomorrow I will have a new service.
05-20-2012 07:06 PM
The same thing is happening to me too. Extra windows, not being able to pass along pictures, now most everything that is sent to me isn't getting here. What the he** is going on over there at comcast? I agree with the OP on comcast support. Went there first just to make sure the problem isn't on my end. So are you going to do anything or is what I've been reading true. We are comcast and we don't care, because we don't have to.
05-20-2012 07:17 PM
Times are tough, comcast acts like their doing us a favor by providing internet, hardly I pay good money for internet service, As a comsumer my only weapon is to take my business elsewhere. I dealt with so many people on this matter and they act like I`m the only one with this problem, but with a little bit of effort , you`ll find alot more people with the same problem. Comcast is not the only game in town.

This is happening to me also. Additionally, when I try to open my emails it reverts back to the home page and I don't see my emails except in the abbreviated form - inbox preview. No help from technical support...actually, technical NON-support. Oh yes, uninstall your browser and then re-install it. It is happening in Chrome, and Firefox...don't think it is my IE9/now IE8...maybe I should revert to IE7 and windows 2000.

There have been some updates to the site that is affecting navigation. Not all users will be seeing these changes. If a new tab is opening when you are going to your account, e-mail, TV listings, and a few other links, this is normal behavior.
If they are opening in a new window and you rather have it appear in a new tab or vice versa, please post your web browser and I can walk you through how to do this.
Any and all feedback is appreciated.
Thanks,

Accessing email opens a new window for me too now. I am using a Mac (Safari browser) and accidently discovered that holding the Command button while selecting Email opens a new tab (in which I can login to email). If there is another solution, I'd love to hear it.
Am extremely frustrated that Comcast decides to change some "features" and doesn't notify its customers.
05-22-2012 08:13 AM
Finally an admission of "updates" screwing everything up. Here's what I would like Joe. I would like to login, click on mail and go to my inbox. Every time I click on mail I end up at the useless "preview" screen, and when I click on 'see entire inbox" I get flashed back to the xfinity home page. Workaround in IE, which I loathe, but it still does not work in Firefox.
WHEN WILL THIS BE FIXED??

May be, but what if it's undesired behavior? How does it benefit Comcast to force customers to open new windows/tabs when they don't want them? Why not allow customers to choose whether they open new windows/tabs or not?
05-23-2012 10:12 AM
This really is annoying and unnecessary. The worst part of it is that the email count in the original tab is not cleared. I also agree that it is annoying to be directed to an email preview page. Just let us go directly to our email in the original tab.

By opening a new window, the portal window will stay around, and that's where most of the ads are.
However, they'll probably rationalize it by saying that it's for the benefit of all the users who don't know how to open links in a new window.
05-25-2012 12:19 AM
I agree!! This is a VERY annoying situation with Comcast. It is happening to me whether I use IE7, IE9, or Firefox. This is a recent development, which comes on top of last years change of defaulting to the preview window rather than the full inbox view.
Plus calling the customer service "helpless" desk is a waste of time.
Comcast needs to correct this soon or they will be losing customers.
LISTEN TO WHAT YOUR CUSTOMERS ARE TRYING TO TELL YOU!!!!
05-25-2012 10:47 AM
Yes, email is opening in a new window BUT it is not opeing the email message -- it is going back to the preview page or home page. I cannot view my emails. NOTHING.... I may get a glimpse of it as it opens and then goes to the preview or home screens. THAT IS IT!
I am not too concerned about it opening in a new window - though it is a nuisance. But it is happening in IE8, IE9, Firefox and Chrome. The same thing so it isn't the browser it IS YOUR WEBSITE.
05-28-2012 09:50 AM
On some of my computers going to email opens a new window. This is annoying. If anyone gets an answer please let me know. The way the system has been reworked is awful and trying to get a rational answer from comcast is futile.

We already got an answer, don't you see it above?

But you're saying it's normal behavior. That really isn't good enough when no one was told or given to have the option to choose it or not. As mental health therapist, I would say this deviant behavior, because there are just to many people who are upset and frustrated by it. Read the DSM-IV which states something to effect if it disturbs the people and social connection around you it is NOT normal. Then customer service doesn't help when they make the end user feel like they are at fault. I think it is more significant and problematic that Comcast chose to make this major change and didn't bother to tell the customer base.
05-28-2012 02:12 PM
" As mental health therapist, I would say this deviant behavior, because there are just to many people who are upset and frustrated by it. "
You hit the nail on the head and that is Comcast's M.O. - deviant - they're a monopoly and they act like one, do whatever the want no matter how many people are inconvenienced (as in what they are doing right now, changing things and telling everyone to clear their cookies as if that is going to do anything but keep you occupied and frustrated). On top of that they have the gall to tout their "customer service", which is complete load of nonsense. Just because the tell you that for five minutes every time you call doesn't make it true.
05-28-2012 02:22 PM
By "normal" he meant that it's working as the page is intended, it's not something wrong with your setup or something you can change. Like it's normal for hurricanes to hit the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, tornadoes in the midwest, and earthquakes in California.
Comcast is testing this out in a limited number of areas. Hopefully the point of the test is to gauge customer reaction to it. If enough of you complain, maybe they'll change their mind.
05-28-2012 05:07 PM
As another frustrated user, please revert back to the way email worked. I use several accounts and by the time I'm done looking at them all, I have over 8 windows open!! Very annoying!! I have several coworkers that use Comcast and your customer numbers will quickly drop if this continues. None of us like it at all...
05-28-2012 07:47 PM
Exactly. DITTO. This has been going on for about a week now. Any updates on a "fix"? Please??
05-28-2012 08:53 PM
I already switched to Gmail. Any solution at this point would be too little, too late. But if this helps anyone's level of frustration, if you scroll down to the bottom of the Comcast homepage, in the middle column under the heading "Xfinity Connect", the "email" button there doesn't open a new window. This may not be the fix you are looking for, but scrolling sure beats the opening of a new window. Hope this helps.
05-28-2012 09:03 PM
Shhhhhh! Don't tell Comcast! They might change that too.
05-28-2012 09:45 PM
This has nothing to do with the browser. You are just trying to blopw spoke up our *** 's. This is a Comcast only page issue. Fix the stupid website or shut up and admit guilt to the issue.
05-29-2012 07:30 AM
I spent 30 minutes with online support over a week ago only to be told that the problem was my computer. I use IE8 and the opening of multiple new windows is not acceptable. Please open an issue for Comcast to fix this problem. It happens using all browsers.
05-29-2012 12:14 PM
OK people, pay attention. Comcast could care less. This will NOT be fixed. Comcast can care less about any of us. Just pay your bill and give them your money anyways as I am sure that is what you all will do and comcast knows it.
I for one have started shopping for new internet and TV services. I will be leaving comcast within the week.

Please take a moment to let Comcast know how you feel about this, using either or both of:
05-29-2012 08:55 PM
I have done this several times and yet still have not gotten an answer!!!! your method of treating customers like we are idiots is truly uncalled for. I pay my bill on time every month, yet when I need your assistance I get a run around!!! If I don't pay my bill you threaten to cancel my service yet you cannot fix the problems your it team creates!!
05-29-2012 09:27 PM
JH, It does no good to complain here nor to rmail any one. Trustme, I have tried them all. The only rerply we ever get is a cut and paste messge from a variety of bird brains who poat as "Comcats Joe".
Comcast is now a monopoly and can do whatever they feellike with litter regards to customers. Might as well live with it. I have just signed up with a new internet and TV provider. It takes 3 days and I will cancel comcast. YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
05-30-2012 06:52 PM
I opened my email tonight and low and behold it is back to the way is was!!!!!!!!!! Maybe enough dissatisfied
customers were finally heard!!
congrats comcast for listening to your customers for once!!!!!
05-30-2012 07:06 PM
I saw that as well jh. I reckon if enough people complain they may listen. I am surprised they did fix it but glad as well.
05-30-2012 09:17 PM
Instead of going through the Comcast home page, try bookmarking this link, which takes me directly to the inbox (bypassing the preview page, too):
05-30-2012 09:25 PM
Well, I almost fainted when I got home and logged in to check my e-mail....it didn't open a new window. WoW! Maybe somebody listened to us. I am afraid it's a little late for me, I am still going to switch to other big internet provider. Less expensive and I'm going to bet it's faster.
07-11-2012 05:39 AM
What is wrong with the programmers at Comcast? This problem was resolved May 30th after numerous posts, and now it starts again on July 10th.. It is not acceptable to have multiple browser windows open. There really is a complete disconnect with your customers. I have had it with Comcast! Get it fixed ASAP. I should have cancelled the last time. I don't need the aggravation!
07-11-2012 07:05 AM
This problem WAS fixed, but it's back again. I wish there was another service provider in our area, I would switch in a second. Every time that I go to them with a problem I get the same old answer, "We are Comcast and we dont care, because we don't have to."
07-11-2012 08:29 AM
Well, before it broke a time or 10 ago and we ended up with this, I used to go to my home page and see a number on the email icon if I had new mail. I would like to see this functionality back again. Maybe they could ask Yahoo how they do it. Worked like stated above for ever. Please, how about it comcast?![]()
07-12-2012 08:07 AM
I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!!! This just started happening to me on yesterday but I didn't call anyone. I was trying to see if the issue cleared itself but apparently it hasn't. I'm having the same issue today so I posted....didn't see your post before submitting it. This is very annoying so hopefully, it will get resolved.
07-12-2012 08:36 AM
It might be 'normal' behavior thanks to their new programming, but it is very UNWANTED behavior, why does Comcast always screw things up? Two windows, what's that for, more space to sell ads? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
07-12-2012 12:45 PM
Cee, I started having the same issue...email opening in a new (unwanted) tab and the homepage not clearing the number of new emails...and as stated so eloquently above, it is a Comcast problem. I don't know what region of the country the previous posters were in, but it may be that Comcast just moved its testing to a new region to see if the complaints will be the same...and they are!!!
Dear Comcast, it's time to quit screwing around and kill the current set of changes. We pay you for our service, not advertising. We put up with a limited amount to provide for your multi-million (bordering on billion)dollar quarterly profits, but making it inconvenient for us is only going to be bad business.
Give us back our previous homepage coding!!!
07-12-2012 02:43 PM
If you're having a problem viewing the number of 'new' emails you have, the problem may be separate from this one. If you haven't already, try clearing your cache....Temporary Internet files and/or your cookies.
Thanks!
CeeView
07-12-2012 02:54 PM
FYI, it's not the number of new e-mails and cache. Totally separate issues.
This issue came up a few months ago, and they returned it to the way it was before they started messing with it. At that time, with the less than wonderful customer service and finding out on top of that I had to pay a monthly service fee to get customer service, I decided to start researching other providers. I have found one, and I am in the process of converting over to the other provider who seems very responsive and customer service oriented. We have had excellent response time and service from this new provider, but now I have to actually call to cancel my account. The new provider seems very customer support oriented unlike Comcast. Why do I have to call them to cancel? Do they want to talk me out of it? Not going to happen.
07-12-2012 03:03 PM
Cee, I regularly empty all cache and cookies as part of my weekly maintenance. This just started in conjunction with the other issue.
07-12-2012 03:30 PM
I have the same problem, and when I open my home page, i get 2 more tabs with empty avg searches, very annoying, its happening on 2 computers, so I know, its not cause I didnt clear cache or any thing. It just started today. I wish they would fix it, its BS!
07-12-2012 03:41 PM
Comcast cannot seem to leave well enough alone. They stopped this aggravation of opening new windows when clicking on your home page to open your e-mail account back at the end of May. Here we are at mid-July and they're back at it again.
Hey, Joe Comcast! What's the story here? Why are users being subjected to this problem again?

Hello,
When you click on Email button or Connect from xfinity.comcast.net, a new window or new tab will open, where you will be prompted to enter your login credentials.
We value your feedback and user experience. Concerning this issue, please post your opinions and feedback to the survey link.

Please explain why I need a new window or tab to log in? Why can't I just do it from my home page and all in the same window/tab?
With all due respect, you must be new to this issue. Please follow this discussion back to May of this year, and you will see the issue that was raised and finally changed by Comcast. Now you've re-opened the same complaint that many users have already raised with you.
Having a bunch of open and unused windows and tabs is just plain wasteful. It takes up resources, it leaves users with a overcrowded computer screen with unused images, and it makes for more maintenance work to have to constantly close up these images. Frankly, it's just as bad as having pop-ups appear!
No employee of Comcast has yet to explain to the user community why this is necessary. Are you willing to step up and give us an answer?
Thanks,
billvonr

If the programmers had tested the code they would have seen the problem. A lesson that should have been learned when the code had to be fixed in May. Evidentially, usability takes a backseat once again along with the customers concerns.
07-12-2012 08:17 PM
here we go again!!! WHY CAN'T THESE IDIOTS AT COMCAST FIX SOMETHING AND THEN LEAVE IT ALONE???????????? I DO NOT WANT A SECOND WINDOW OPENED WHEN TRYING TO VIEW MY EMAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
07-12-2012 08:36 PM
ONCE AGAIN JOE WHATEVER OR WHOEVER DOES NOT ANSWER THE QUESTION!!!! GO FIGURE!!!!!
ALL THAT LINK DOES IS SEND YOU TO ANOTHER LINK TO TAKE A SURVEY AND THEN AT THE END OF IT IT TELLS YOU THEY APPRICIATE YOUR FEEDBACK, NOT ALL FEEDBACKS WILL GET AN ANSWER BUT IT HELPS THEM FIX PROBLEMA
WHAT A JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
07-12-2012 08:52 PM
Well I've been around for a while and I can tell you that just about every single update they have made with email, beginning with "Smartzone" has been a clusterfrick which nobody likes. And good luck getting any changes made that you would like to see.

Is there a new school of thought in business that teaches you'll succeed by making your customers frustrated and angry???

Evidently this must be the case at some but not all companies. At my company, we bend over backwards to try and please our customers, keep them happy and coming back for more..
