My smartzone email account was hacked

I think my account was hacked.  I only use Smartzone for emails.  Early this morning a whole bunch of spam emails were sent out from my email address to most of my contacts in my address contact list.  I changed my password and deleted alot of contacts from my address book.  Is there anything else I can do?  How did this happen?

Re: My smartzone email account was hacked

Were the messages in your sent folder showing that they had really been sent from your account?

Or do they just appear to be from your account because the return address is your email address?

It is incredibly easy (and very handy; I've been doing it for good reasons for years) to send email so that it appears to come from some other email address. All someone needs is your email address. They do not need access to your account.

Changing your password on your Comcast account was an appropriate step.

Yes, all of the messages were in my sent folder, so they were really sent from my account.  So, I guess that means that someone must have found out my password somehow, which is pretty scary that they were able to do that.

It also is possible that you were the victim of malware that took control of your computer. If I were you, I would run virus-checking software on all computers you have used to access Smartzone.

And since some folks have the bad habit of using the same password for multiple places, you should consider changing it for other accounts if that's the case.

Re: My smartzone email account was hacked

If you used a public computer to access your SmartZone email and let the browser remember your information, that could have let someone have access. You could have done that a while ago and someone just now took advantage of it.

That's a low probability situation, but we can use it as a reminder of defensive computing practices.

I just get an email from tripadvisor stating that this past weekend they discovered that an unauthorized third party had stolen part of TripAdvisor's member email list. I am wondering if this caused this problem that I had.

The password for both accounts is the same.  So, I guess it is a possibility.

Re: My smartzone email account was hacked

My online smartzone email account was hacked last night. Around midnight, a spam email was sent out to all of the contacts in my address book. It also appeared in my sent items.

I rarely use smartzone, most of my email is done with Windows Mail. But this email was sent from the smartzone account, and only to the contacts in that address book. Not to the ones in my windows mail address book.

I never use a public computer. I think that somehow the comcast system may have been hacked.

I wonder how many others this has affected?

Immediately change your password to a strong password.  (Upper & lower case letters, numbers, & a character make a strong password)  Make sure you also change your password to match the new one- in Windows mail & any other email clients you use.

This is an issue that has been reported a number of times in this forum.  It is not only happening with Comcast, but other ISP's as well. Comcast was not hacked. You can search the Forums for other Threads about it.

Here is a clickable link to another Thread about it:  LINK

If you would please answer the questions below, the information compiled may help in the future as this is investigated.  Thank you.

1. Was there a copy in the 'Sent Mail' folder for Smartzone (if used)

2. Was there a copy in the 'Sent Mail' folder for the email program on their computer (if you use one)

3. Do you use a social media program (Facebook, Twitter, etc)

4. If you do, was the contact list populated from their contact list.

5. Do you use the same username for each account (Smartzone, Email Program, Facebook, etc)

6. Do you use the same password for any of the above.

Re: My smartzone email account was hacked

Changing my password and deleting my contacts were the first thing I did.

1. Yes there's a copy in the SmartZone sent folder

2. No there is not a copy in the Windows Mail folder -- additionally, the email was only sent to the contacts listed in my SmartZone address book, not the same contacts in my Windows Mail address book.

3. Yes

4. No

5. No

Kimberly,

Can you kindly send me a PM (private message) with the following information:

Your email address that had spam sent from

The time/date's from your sent items folder

The recipient's email address (who was the spam sent too?)

This information will help me investigate.

thank you,

Re: My smartzone email account was hacked

My comcast email account was hacked last night as well. Somewhere around midnight to 4:12 this morning bogus emails were sent to folks in my address book. Comcast said the only thing I could do was change the password, using one with increased strength to prevent it happening again. You know, a combo of mixed letters, numbers, symbols so it would be tougher to hack. I am hearing that other comcast subscribers have been hacked as well recently. It would be nice if Comcast would clue us in on this sort of thing.Good Luck!

Re: My smartzone email account was hacked

My email account was hacked and just sent spam mail to everyone in my address book as well. It is very troubling to me, and when I contacted Comcast through chat, they told me to change my password and then let them know if everything was the same in 24 hrs. I'm not sure what difference the 24 hrs. will make, but I wanted this investigated and kind of got the run around when I asked if it would be. They told me to chat back in 24 hrs. If someone could look into this I would be really appreciative!

Re: My smartzone email account was hacked

Folks,

We are actively investigating this issue.  At this point we believe this may be the result of users using either commonly guessed passwords or sharing the same password used for Comcast.net with another site that may have been compromised.  We continue to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of our customers and their accounts.

Re: My smartzone email account was hacked

FYI I recieved a reply earlier today from  Comcast Office of Rick Germano, Senior Vice
President of Customer Operations, they advised:

If you believe that your account has been compromised please forward all pertinent information to our abuse department at abuse@comcast.net.

I only pulled the important info from the reply. The gentleman contacting me was very polite. So, it is good to know that I am not the only person this has happened to and I do not use the comcast address and password in connection with other sites that I visit. I plan on forwarding the pertinent e-mails to comcast. Perhaps they can track down who is behind his and take steps to encourage the perpetrator to change his/her ways.

Mine was as well.  Are any of you also Playstation Network users?  I made the mistake of using the same password there, so I suspect that the recent intrusion there may be the source of passwords.  I'll have to check trip advisor.  I have used that in the past.

When my account was hacked three weeks ago, the adds sent were for Asthma medication. I do not have a sony playstation account, so thats not were they got my information from. This was the only account of mine that was hacked.

I have never received any follow up from comcast regarding this.

Re: My smartzone email account was hacked

My webmail account was also hacked on April 29 @ around 12 noon. From 12-2:30 someone sent e-mails containing viruses from my account to everyone in my address book. I called Comcast @ 10 PM cause I hadn't noticed until then. After an hour and 1/2 (literally I hung up at 11:30) I finally gave up.

EVERYONE I spoke with was sympathetic to my problem but NO ONE COULD DO ANYTHING!

Since this e-mail account is my primary account, the hacker has access to all my information and I cannot delete the e-mail account. Of course I changed the password but I am so freakin frustrated! Account/network/system security should be an ISP's #1 priority since that is there bread and butter. Apparently with Comcast it is not the case. The ISA department (security) goes home at 6:30PM EST.

I ran Adaware scans, scanned for Bots and other malware. My home computers are not infected. They must have brute forced from the web. Shouldn't an account lock out after some number of login attempts?

I want to delete all of my Comcast accounts and use something more secure...GMAIL!

AAAAHHHHHH!

Re: My smartzone email account was hacked

I have not gotten any real answers either but the suggested change your password. A friend of mine suggested using the Last Pass password manager. It is supposed to be really good and has won awards. ZDNet, pcmag, pcword all stand behind it. The best part is its free. I am still deciding whether I like it. It seems to work. It creates passwords upto 16 digits with letter, symbols, and numbers. It remembers them for you. The old days of the simple password is gone I guess. Anyway, if you guys want to try it out here is the website:

https://lastpass.com

I don't know that we will ever get any real answers but from what I have found out, all we can do is change our passwords and move on.

Re: My smartzone email account was hacked

Decent advice, CORDY.  LastPass is a good tool, and has been recommended by others.

Beyond making the password change, those who've noticed the "hack" should be extra diligent in monitoring their accounts, to make sure the problem doesn't continue.  Which could be a strong indicator that the source of the password was actually their system, and that whatever logged their original password also logged the change.  Or that they continue to indulge in some sort of behavior that opens their password up to others.  (Clicking on risky e-mails, for example.)

Believe me, the "Experts" here will continue to prod Comcast on this.  But as I've said elsewhere, I don't think they'll be very up front if a problem is found on their side.  I'll be happy if they find something (assuming there is a Comcast issue) and tell us they closed the barn door.  A bit late for some, no doubt.

My account had the same type of spam emails sent from it.

In addition to changing my password, I have removed all names from my address book, and will not have any names in my address book in the future, to prevent this from happening again.

Re: My smartzone email account was hacked

My Smartzone account was hacked this morning in the same manner. 9 e-mails were sent out from my account and were subsequently stored in the SENT FOLDER. Recipients were all in the Comcast address book. I only use Smartzone.

1. Was there a copy in the 'Sent Mail' folder for Smartzone (if used)
YES.

2. Was there a copy in the 'Sent Mail' folder for the email program on their computer (if you use one)
No other program.

3. Do you use a social media program (Facebook, Twitter, etc)
NONE OF THEM.

4. If you do, was the contact list populated from their contact list.

5. Do you use the same username for each account (Smartzone, Email Program, Facebook, etc)
n/a

6. Do you use the same password for any of the above.
n/a

It seems to me Comcast should be helpoing ius to understand how this happened and how it can be prevented. I thought webmail was fairly secure.

I've got my own opinion - Comcast IS department is weak and their standards/policies are too. The fact that they don't cop to their shortcomings transparently or provide proactive feedback to their customers about their security issues speaks VOLUMES! Wish there was an alternative!

Re: My smartzone email account was hacked

ghillman4,

Are you seeing the spam messages in your Sent Items folder?  If so, then changing your password was the right thing to do.  If you're not seeing the emails, then it is likely the email is not coming from your account, and a spammer is faking your email address, which unfortunately is trivial to do regardless of where you have your email account hosted.

Since the ability to use the Comcast security offering is tied to your Comcast e-mail address (and active internet service), you'll still be able to use it.  Even if you opt not to use the Comcast e-mail for anything else.

Changing your password was the right thing to do.  But if you did it via a compromised system (running a keylogger, for example) then the password update might have been passed along.  As indicated, if the mail isn't in your sent folder, it's probably not actually originating from your user id, but instead is showing you as the sender (spoofed).

Re: My smartzone email account was hacked

My Smartzone account was hacked this morning in the same manner. 34 e-mails were sent out from my account from 6:04 p.m. to 6:24 p.m. EDT on June 1, 2011 and were subsequently stored in the SENT FOLDER. Recipients were all in the Comcast address book on Smartzone.

1. Was there a copy in the 'Sent Mail' folder for Smartzone (if used) - YES.

2. Was there a copy in the 'Sent Mail' folder for the email program on their computer (if you use one) - No

3. Do you use a social media program (Facebook, Twitter, etc) - No

4. If you do, was the contact list populated from their contact list.

5. Do you use the same username for each account (Smartzone, Email Program, Facebook, etc) - No

6. Do you use the same password for any of the above. - No

This is a major issue, I will not be using Comcast anymore for my email. I have been reading and Comcast has had this issue for a while and have not really done anything to fix it.

While I agree that this is a major issue it's not just Comcast that has been affected.  If you read non-Comcast forums you'll find that this has affected a lot of other web-based email accounts as well, including Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo.  In fact, it happened to my Hotmail account.  Sadly, no one, not Comcast, not Microsoft, not anyone is saying more than "change your password".  And yes, it's very frustrating.

Re: My smartzone email account was hacked

Same problem here.  I normally use gmail but I used SmartZone one time and wouldn't you know it -- immediately the recipient, who happened to be my only SmartZone contact, began receiving a barrage of spam from my account.  All of the spam is in my SmartZone sent items folder.  I'm an IT professional with a security certification so I knew to use a strong password, my computer definitely does not have a virus (hardened and scanned for viruses regularly), so this is truly baffling to me.  I am suspicious that our credentials have been exposed within Comcast.  Nothing else makes sense in my case and I see this has become a frequent problem with others.  I will be changing my password, clearing the contact list, and I will never use SmartZone again.

Re: My smartzone email account was hacked

Same thing happened to me a few hours ago (spam links to all of my Comcast address book people):

1. Was there a copy in the 'Sent Mail' folder for Smartzone (if used) - YES.

2. Was there a copy in the 'Sent Mail' folder for the email program on their computer (if you use one) - No

3. Do you use a social media program (Facebook, Twitter, etc) - Yes

5. Do you use the same username for each account (Smartzone, Email Program, Facebook, etc) - Yes

6. Do you use the same password for any of the above. - Yes

The address book was my online Comcast one - not my personal Outlook one.

Immediately change your password.  If you also use an email client, make sure you change it in the client as well.  A strong password consists of upper & lower case letters, numbers, and a character or two in the mix.

Do NOT use the same password on multiple sites.

Comcast is aware of this issue.

Re: My smartzone email account was hacked

The same exact thing happened to me today at 3:18 PM EST. Emails were sent to small groups infiltrating my smartZone address book! Comcast would do NOTHING! They told me I had to call Norton because that is the anti virus I have on my computer through and account I actually pay for.  I changed my password too and ran a full system scan but it did not appear that I had any issues? It makes no sense.

The emails were in my smartzone SENT folder. I do not use any other email. I DO have accounts on FB and LinkedIn.  I have Vista.

There were SEVERAL different subject lines used and they were sent in alphabetical order to small groups in my address book. The only thing in the body was a link that I assume has a virus. Some of the link were:

web2.admin2.mikey.at/fumyto.php

musik-rackets.com/fumyto.php

bitmapdata.fr/fumyto.php

christophejorge.fr/fumyto.php

There were SEVERAL more. Please any help would be appreciated to avoid this.

Re: My smartzone email account was hacked

It is frustrating. The same thing happened to me in March. There is not much to do except change password and make it strong with letters, numbers and symbols. Also, I use a free Gmail account that has never had issues with security..........ironicaly. You may want to consider setting up an account with them. I know it is a pain but Comcast will not, maybe can not, do anything to help. One thing I did do was forward all the hacked emails to the Comcast abuse line. May not have done any good, but made me feel better. Good luck and stay safe.:smileyhappy:
