When I ping the ip with a -a, it resolves a name. The name is also listed in our DNS MX records. It's listed as the priority record but it is listed.
Is a PTR record different? Not sure what I need to do next.

Try a dig -x and see if you have a PTR record, if you don't then you need to create one. If in doubt check with your hosting provider or your registrar on how to do this.
