SMTP Errors - Unable to send Email - 0x800CCC78 - 452 4.1.0 ... temporary failure

Anyone else having issues with sending via SMTP?

Specifically...
smtp.comcast.net
Using SSL Port 465 with Authentication checked.

Error received in Outlook 2003:
Task 'mail.comcast.net - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC78) : 'Unable to send the message. Please verify the e-mail address in your account properties.  The server responded: 452 4.1.0 ... temporary failure'

However, inbound POP3 mail.comcast.net SSL Port 995 is working fine.

Thanks.

Re: SMTP Errors - Unable to send Email - 0x800CCC78 - 452 4.1.0 ... temporary failure

This type of error message usually indicates some kind of transient problem detected by the SMTP server, like not being able to connect to the target mail server to deliver the message.  Since the error is temporary, the server will usually keep the message in queue and try it again at regular intervals.  There lots of other things that can go wrong, so the above is only an example.

Are you still having this problem?  Does it happen with ALL messages, even those going to different domains?  I take it sending mail from Outlook worked just fine before?

Re: SMTP Errors - Unable to send Email - 0x800CCC78 - 452 4.1.0 ... temporary failure

Baric, I think you're misunderstanding where this error occurred. Since it happened during the dialogue between the mail client and the SMTP server, the message never got into the queue in the first place. It should be waiting in Outlook's Outbox folder.

There's really no way to know what happened -- all the server said was "Temporary failure", which could be anything. Try resending again.

Re: SMTP Errors - Unable to send Email - 0x800CCC78 - 452 4.1.0 ... temporary failure

Yeah, I understood that.  Depending on conditions, the server may actually attempt to send the message while you're connected instead of just placing it in the outgoing mail queue (say if the queue was empty, etc).  It's not unheard of to get error responses generated by the target SMTP server during the send, as opposed to just as a rejection message at some later point.

But you're right, the message could indicate any number of problems, it's impossible to say from the error itself.  I'm sure the server log has more detailed info, but we ain't going to see that, are we? ;-)  Heck for all I know there could be a file space problem on the spool or a DNS lookup problem...

Still having problems as I type.  Everything worked fine till today.  All messages are impacted and to various domains.  The messages are stuck queued in the Outbox folder.  Is this a system wide Comcast issue?

Re: SMTP Errors - Unable to send Email - 0x800CCC78 - 452 4.1.0 ... temporary failure

I'm not seeing a problem here, and if it was a system wide problem, I would expect to see a ton of posts by screaming customers.  So it's likely a local issue with your setup.  Have you changed anything lately?  Either settings in Outlook or perhaps installed new software?  Are you using a firewall or virus scanner?  Try turning those off and see if it clears up.  Another thing to try is turning on the smtp outbound logging function in Outlook to see if the log has any additional information.  But since the error is coming from the SMTP server, it's probably best if one of the forum admins can go have the smtp server logs looked at, they will probably say what the exact error is.

Re: SMTP Errors - Unable to send Email - 0x800CCC78 - 452 4.1.0 ... temporary failure

Nothing has been changed - no new software / new settings / etc.  Basic XP firewall and standard router firewall setup.  AVG is used with the Email Scanner turned off.  Tried with another machine connected to a non-Comcast ISP and still get the same error.  I'm suspecting issues with the Comcast SMTP server using the "Travel" SSL setup of Port 465.  This setup worked fine before today regardless whether I'm using Comcast or another ISP for sending email.  I also suspect since majority of users are likely using Port 25 or 587 that not many are having issues and is isolated to using Port 465?

Thanks for the help.

What's the domain part of that email address? That's the email address your email client is configured to send "from". This looks like a problem caused by Comcast's inability to do a DNS lookup.

Re: SMTP Errors - Unable to send Email - 0x800CCC78 - 452 4.1.0 ... temporary failure

Yes, there sure seems to be some kind of problem with comcast smtp servers.

I have been getting a similar error all day long in Saint Paul MN. My Thunderbird email client reports it as a "temporary server problem" possibly caused by "message too long". However the messages are normal size and if I keep trying eventually they send ok. So there is some kind of problem with comcast and it is NOT my message size or content etc.

And no I haven't changed anything else on my end. So please, don't suggest looking for client-side reasons.

Early this morning (Tuesday around 6am) the whole connection died and I had to reboot the modem and my router.
But I got the same IP address as before so that wasn't the reason either. I think the network is a little sick, most likely.

Re: SMTP Errors - Unable to send Email - 0x800CCC78 - 452 4.1.0 ... temporary failure

I am also having a problem sending  The error I get is
Task 'pop3@comcast.net - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC0F) : 'The connection to the server was interrupted.  If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'  I was wondering if it could be a security issue with Norton internet security, but thought I'd check here as well, in case others are having problems, too.  Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks.

I'm getting the same error. To be specific, here is the full error message I get:
The size of the message you are trying to send exceeds a temporary size limit of the server. The message was not sent, try to reduce the message size and try again. The server responded: 4.1.0 ... temporary failure.
I've tried several times, even with empty messages, and still get the same badly written message.

Re: SMTP Errors - Unable to send Email - 0x800CCC78 - 452 4.1.0 ... temporary failure

I think the mail clients are guessing that the reason is a size problem, because this is a common cause of this error code, but obviously this is an exception.

Since it's happening to so many users, but not all (I sent email this evening with no problem), I suspect some of the servers are having problems.

Re: SMTP Errors - Unable to send Email

[ Edited ]
OMG!!! I'VE BEEN HAVING THIS EXACT SAME ISSUE since late december / early january, and it's been DRIVING ME NUTS!!!!!!!!!!

here's my scenario...

i have multiple computers this affects. my MacBookPro, my wife's iBook, my iPhone, and our home PowerMac.

we've got multiple email accounts (comcast.net, vanderbilt.edu, adairnet.com, sybersite.com, & myarbonne.com) between us.

for years now i've had us setup to use the Comcast "Travel" settings (Port 465) to "send" emails for all of these email accounts. the main reason being, we hop from wifi location to wifi location with our laptops and need to send email consistently without the hassel of changing the settings depending on where we are.

the most often locations being 1) our home, 2) panera, 3) vanderbilt, or 4) other various free wifi locations around nashville.
and then occasionally with family out of state.

this setup has worked flawlessly for years. NOTHING CHANGED. then all of a sudden starting aprox this past december/january, we have had the hardest time "sending" emails from "all" of these accounts. yes "all" of them.
receiving emails is perfect - no problems. but to send - when it DOES go thru, it takes FOREVER (seemingly)!
but more often than not, when we hit "send", it pops right back up saying something like "can't send from this outgoing mail server, please choose another".
sometimes it will send by choosing another,
sometimes it will send by just trying again,
sometimes it will take several to many tries bouncing between them.
eventually it will go, but it's made sending emails a HUGE hassel.

there's no pattern to it.
the same thing happens no matter where we are at.

it cannot be our email settings - because its not changed and has worked great for years, and it happens on both of our computers.
it cannot be our router/modem settings - because it happens no matter where we are at.

i have a server admin friend who thinks it may be an email send server going bad SOMEWHERE in the chain between Comcast and the rest of the net.
but that it would be impossible to figure out where and who to contact.

i don't know what to do, but it's horribly frustrating.

anybody else got any clues?
thx.

Re: SMTP Errors - Unable to send Email - 0x800CCC78 - 452 4.1.0 ... temporary failure

I am now seeing the identical problem.  I've pinged the various SMTP ports with success.  I suspect that Comcast is doing "something" and that they are not telling us about it.  Most likely some kind of Homeland Security or National Security Agency/Federal Bureau of Investigation situation.  But also, and probably too, is that Comcast has found those of us who are using Linux and Thunderbird  :smileycool:.    I put a packet sniffer to work on all of our outgoing data ... you'd be surprized how THAT fills up an 8GB data stick.  Anyway, aside from the various normal stuff going in and out, there is othing which looks "suspicious".  However, I think that it is time to make a written complaint to the FCC and your local Cable Franchise, about this possible DoS.  I doubt that we will receive anything other than bland platitudes from "official" Comcast.

You're saying that sometimes you get '452 4.1.1 ... temporary failure' when trying to sending an email to AOL via Comcast?

Re: SMTP Errors - Unable to send Email - 0x800CCC78 - 452 4.1.0 ... temporary failure

No, sorry.. On some of the AOL emails, I'm getting:

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification
Delivery to the following recipients failed permanently:

xxx.aol.com

and this is occurring with various AOL accounts.. sometimes a message goes through to an email address and sometimes it fails with the above message..

any ideas?

I just spoke with a Comcast tech and he said the problem is with Outlook and gave me Microsoft's # - 800-936-5700.  Everything was working fine until yesterday (2/6).

That AOL permanent error message is about the AOL mailserver refusing an email, probably because it's an invalid AOL account, or some problem at AOL. I think... you're sending to xxx@aol.com, not xyx@xxx.aol.com, right? The previous error was a temporary error about the Comcast mailserver refusing an email, probably because there was a problem with a DNS lookup of the domain. It's hard to say for sure without knowing the domain name. You could email me at bakesph at comcast dot net if you're leery of publicly posting the domain name.

[ Edited ]
It's happening to us, too.  Mail sent from comcast to caribousystems.com (our corporate domain hosted by mailtrust.com) is failing for various  reasons.  The errors are being returned at the point of sending in the form of a dialog box from the mail client (OE, Thunderbird, etc).  In other words, the sending server is responding with these errors, not the receiving.  More detail in the other thread:

Re: SMTP Errors - Unable to send Email - 0x800CCC78 - 452 4.1.0 ... temporary failure

It probably was an aol problem for the aol delivery problems because it cleared up.
And like magic, the comcast error disappeared too...

Thanks for taking the time to help

Re: SMTP Errors - Unable to send Email - 0x800CCC78 - 452 4.1.0 ... temporary failure

Here we go again... Anyone else encountering this outbound problem right now?  First time I had this was on 2/5/2008 and it magically cleared up in the AM hours of 2/6/2008.  Definitely not a client issue as nothing has been touched and it has been working smooth up until 2/5/2008.
Error received in Outlook 2003:
Task 'mail.comcast.net - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC78) : 'Unable to send the message. Please verify the e-mail address in your account properties.  The server responded: 452 4.1.0 ... temporary failure'

In case he answers your question, it seems like a good time to point out that the recipient domain isn't the problem here, it's the sender domain. 4.1.0 indicates that the error came after the Mail command, 4.1.1 would indicate an error after the Rcpt command.

telnet mx1.comcast.net 25
...
mail from:<x@schwabe.com>
452 4.1.0 ... temporary failure

telnet smtp.comcast.net
...
mail from:<x@schwabe.com>
452 4.1.0 ... temporary failure
rset
250 2.0.0 OK
mail from:<me@comcast.net>
250 2.1.0 <me@comcast.net> sender ok
rcpt to:<x@schwabe.com>
452 4.1.1 ... temporary failure

This is irrespective of domain being sent to.  Same error whether it be single or multiple recipients to various domains including Comcast, Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, corporate domains, etc.  Thanks for looking into.

Okay - back in business 'for now.'

Just for reference here are both the logs when there is a SMTP error and when things are working - posted below.

I thought the issues were isolated with the *.emeryville.ca.mail.comcast.net SMTP servers since the problem was occuring with them on both the 2/5/2008 log and today's however it went fine from OMTA10.emeryville.ca.mail.comcast.net tonight.  Also seem to have better luck with *.westchester.pa.mail.comcast.net servers it seems.

What domain are you trying to send to?

In case he answers your question, it seems like a good time to point out that the recipient domain isn't the problem here, it's the sender domain. 4.1.0 indicates that the error came after the Mail command, 4.1.1 would indicate an error after the Rcpt command.

telnet mx1.comcast.net 25
...
mail from:<x@schwabe.com>
452 4.1.0 ... temporary failure

telnet smtp.comcast.net
...
mail from:<x@schwabe.com>
452 4.1.0 ... temporary failure
rset
250 2.0.0 OK
mail from:<me@comcast.net>
250 2.1.0 <me@comcast.net> sender ok
rcpt to:<x@schwabe.com>
452 4.1.1 ... temporary failure

Steve-Baker has a good point.  It does appears to be an issue with sender domain as I am using a custom domain address for sending purposes.  Using Outlook 2003 SP3 but all authenticated using SSL with Port 465 and Comcast incoming login.  No problems for years until now.

I think JoeA07 may be having similar problems in:
I can RECEIVE but cannot SEND E-mail when using alternate e-mail address

bigchris:
Can we keep this problem going in this thread since I know that all client setup is fine and everything is set using AUTH SSL Port 465?

Yes, I have hit the nail on the head. But the only relevant bit in the logs you posted is "MAIL FROM: <*****>", and, unfortunately, "*****" doesn't tell us any more than we already knew. The problem is the Comcast DNS servers, but Comcast is passing the buck. But maybe posting the domain you're talking about will add some weight to the 2X4 such that getting that 2X4 upside the head will eventually get their attention
