Recently I have been getting emails from my contacts whose attachments now have the extension .eml and i can no longer open them except via a pop up window. Once the pop up comes up the extensions are for the usual formats of .wmv or ppt etc. These are coming from the same few contacts. The rest of the text in the email is normal communication. What is going on?

.eml is the file type used for saved messages in Outlook Express. It sounds as though the senders are sending you a message that saved from Outlook Express and are forwarding it to you as an attachment.
See if this information helps you. Post back.

I think .eml is also used by Mozilla Thunderbird.

In my Xfinity webmail inbox, I checked the boxes for 3 emails and forwarded them to gmail. They showed up in gmail as a single email with 3 attached eml files. I was able to download the eml attachments as normal and open with Wordpad. They seem to be intact with headers. Drawbacks could be that they are no longer in my email system, and I am not sure how images or attachments to my original email would be handled.

Thanks, but the solution is such a long way around it just to open such a file.

Whoops, sorry, I was not offering this as a solution. I was just describing some of the problems I also had with eml files.
