CD rom drive ??

The drive belt on my CD broke... What to do....

I've changed fan belts on autos, and lawn mowers and snowblowers...

Is this something that is repairable or am I up the proverbial creek?

Is my computer being affected by the drive spinning on startup?

Can I go under the hood and disconnect the drive and not create any havoc?

I do have a CD burner so I could use that if need be.

TIA

Re: CD rom drive ??

Frankly if something on the drive broke and you want a stand alone cd drive (no burner) I would say just buy a new cd drive or even a dvd drive. You can get a good non burner cd or dvd drive for very cheap. It could probably be fixed but really it is not worth the time, effort, or expense with how cheap optical drive are nowadays.

Re: CD rom drive ??

If you can change a fan belt on a car (something I'd have a little bit of trouble with), you can change out a CDROM. It's simply 4 scr*ws, a power connector, and a data cable. Take out the old drive, slide the new one in, reconnect the cables.

Re: CD rom drive ??

BluJay,

It really isn't worth trying to fix the CD drive with the broken belt, just replace it if you want to have two drives. It will not hurt anything to leave it in the computer.

If you do want to replace it I would recommend that you consider getting this drive:

NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive, Silver
or
NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive, Beige
or
NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive, Black

Re: CD rom drive ??

Thanks folks for your helpful input...

And JW, thanks for the links. Just one additional question.
Probably a dumb one at that. but.......

My current cd drive is 45x.. Does it make any difference if it is replaced with a 52x?

Try not to laugh too hard... :smileyhappy: But I really haven't a clue.

No Blujay.. It likely would make little noticeable difference.. I noticed that JW50 gave some links to a DVD drive (even though his links are broken) But you might consider that.. They've gotten cheaper and will give you the option to record DVD's (don't worry they do CD's just fine)

Re: CD rom drive ??

Thanks Cajun... I was a little confused with some of what I read, and you helped to clarify for me..

Give me some nuts, bolts, scr*ws, a wrench and a socket set and I can usually follow instructions... Computers are a bit different..:smileywink:

BluJay,

The links were to www.newegg.com, just go there and look for NEC DVD drives. It is a really good drive.

This board is really having problems with links, it inserted a space in each of those links, thats why they didn't work.

Re: CD rom drive ??

JW,

Thanks, found the info. I realized when I clicked on the links that something was mucked up, so just didn't comment on it.. And went on my merry way investigating the newegg site.

My thanks for your help and my sympathies to you and all who post links in these poor excuses for help forums, especially the critical ones in the Security Forum..
