I have a dynamic IP address and it has not changed in several months.
How can I force a change?
I've tried turning off the modem-router (and removing the battery) overnight and that didn't work. I also tried changing the MAC address in the router. Any other ideas?

Why would you need it to "change" ?

Hello,
You can give this a try:
The way to force a different IP address is to assign one manually (Control Panel --> Network Connections --> Right Click LAN --> Properties --> TCP/IPv4 --> Properties). The IP address assigned from the DHCP server is based on the MacAddress of the PC, so another way would be to change the network card, or use a USB networkadaptor (since its just for testing).

That wont work to change the WAN (public) IP address if ones machine is connected to a router.

This is true for the way Comcast's DHCP server works and not necessarily the way the built in DHCP server in a router works. Which one is it ? Which one does the OP wish to change ? My money is on their public IP address as this is the way people try to circumvent a web site or forum banning due to misbehavior / breaking the rules

Dear "Connection Expert:"
My reasons for wanting to change are my business.
What's not clear is whether you do not know the answer to my question, or you feel entitled to judge my reasons for asking and will provide the requested information only if you approve of my answer.

Dear poster. FYI, the fact that the forum guidelines, and MORE IMPORTANTLY, my own sense of ethics and integrity will not allow me to assist any possible bad netiquette so good luck to you. Someone else who doesn't care may come along to tell you.

Connection Expert: You seem to assume there is one - and only one - reason a person might prefer a dynamic IP address (one that really is dynamic). Consider that security might be another. Message board moderators are not the only ones who might want to keep track of you, and those others might have more sinister motives.
Instead of investing in all sorts of security software which may or may not be effective and which usually degrades system performance, a regularly-changing IP address might be a solution for those of us not hosting anything.
PS: What's weird is even though my IP address is always the same, my reported physical location keeps changing.
