Questions about nvidia video cards

I am upgrading my video card and have a couple questions.My corrent card is a AGP-nvidia fx5200 128mb/128bit and im concidering a bfg fx5900 ultra 256mb/256bit...I understand the 256mb is the memory the card has but dont get the 128-256 memory bandwidth part of it .Gateway has told me that the 256 bit card would work but I have little trust in the good folks in india that give advice..thanks

Re: Questions about nvidia video cards

As long as both your motherboard has the socket your vid card need and your PSU is powerfull enough, it should work.

Re: Questions about nvidia video cards

The 128 bit is the actual number of paths to the gpu per clock cycle. The more bits, the more memory bandwidth, the better theoretical performance. In reality this is nice but it doesn't have as much effect as the GPU's architecture and ability to process what is in the memory.

The higher the screen resolution the more memory a card needs. The amount of memory needed depends on the resolution and size of the connected monitor. Running your 15 inch monitor at 1600 x 1200 resolution is really cool but not really practical viewing. Also tests have shown that if you don't need the extra memory don't get it. 256 cards are a little slower at the lower resolutions.

I personally would not buy a FX5900 ultra, with the 6600 GT available for about the same price. There is a significantly better performance difference between the cards. The 6600 can run the latest games with very high quality settings at acceptable frame rates and the 5900U can not.

6600GT is a very nice and appreciable upgrade from what you have.

Re: Questions about nvidia video cards

Having just replaced a FX5200 with a 6600GT in my daughter's computer i can tell you it is a significant upgrade. The increased amount of detail in her favorite game Vampire Bloodlines- Masquerade is stunning. She was a little concerned about spending the money but she now considers the $225 very well spent.

Re: Questions about nvidia video cards

Yeah the 6600GT is a sound investment IMO especially since ATI doesn't really have anything to directly compete with it besides the 9800 Pro which is slower in most games. The way i see it ATI needs to bump the 9800 Pro down to about $160.00 to 150.00. The X800XL looks very good but right now is pricey and is only PCI express. The 6600GT is actually quite a nice card for anyone that still has a K7 athlon system or older P4c.

Re: Questions about nvidia video cards

What are you talking about? There are plenty of cheap PCIe cards from ATI.

x800 vanilla ==> ??? ( Retail price should be $200 but because of higher demand, it is slightly more expensive)
x700 ==> $200
x600 ==> <$150

BEST DEAL:

x800XL ==> ??? ( Retail price should be $300 but because of high demand it goes up to $400) ( x800XL matches and sometimes even surpasses Nvidia 6800GT($400)!!! you will have to wait a month or so for this vid card to drop down to its recommended price.

Re: Questions about nvidia video cards

I know about high demand and performance and it being new for the reason X800XL being why it's priced high, and i know there 'are' some PCI express cards other than the 6600GT. Just none that directly compare in most game benchmarks at it's price point. More then anything else the 6600GT a great 'stop gap' AGP card for those people that have slighly older processors and AGP motherboards to camp on until they actually upgrade their system to a PCI express unit.

I never said there weren't 'any' PCI express cards. And the X700 and X600 doesn't compare to the performance of the 6600GT PCI express or AGP version. I'm aware of every single card out there and the relative specs on each one from clocks to performance to pricing. Since i order them in bulk for my local shop you would think i would know.

Re: Questions about nvidia video cards

Found this today when looking around: http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4082632
An Nvidia Ultra OC for $389.99 after $50 rebate. Wish I hadnt already gotten a vanilla 6800 OC back in September now. Now I will just wait for the next generation of cards when I build a new system, hopefully by fall 2005.

Re: Questions about nvidia video cards

you can never stay ahead of the game with PCs unless you are really rich and could afford getting a new one very 4 month. There is always something new. I want A64FX but Dual Core CPUs will come out in the summer. But then i assure myself that after dual core there will b quad core and 8 and 16. There is just no end.

I agree. Tech is moving at an extremely fast clip now - too fast for the driver teams to even so much as code reliable drivers. It's crazy.
