So here's the problem

I have setup my Xfinity software and have been online,  but now I'm getting the following messages:

"selfinstall4.comcast.com/captiveportal/index.html"

"Not found 404"

"Forbidden You don't have permission to access /captiveportl/index.html on this server."

I have two laptops. Xfinity software on both. Xfinity registered. Both computers are giving me the

same error messgaes. If I shut the computer down, then it runs okay for awhile, then starts with the error

messages again. Is it a security issue with McAfee or is it an issue with Xfinity software? How do I fix it?

What do you mean by you setup Xifinty software. You don't need any software from xfinity ( comcast ) on your computer to use the internet. Also do you have the xfinity toolbar installed if so uninstall it to see if that clears up your problem. Please give the experts a little more infor about your problem to help you out.

Re: So here's the problem

I'm having the same issue with a new modem (and new comcast service).  It's really intermittent and will go away, sometimes, for days but then will come back for a few infuriating minutes.  Happens on multiple computers.  Sometimes it'll direct me to xfinity's site (after saying something about selfinstall4) and then I'll be able to fix it, temporarily, by signing on with my xfinity account: more often, it just gives that message and doesn't allow further access.  Like I said- it's super intermittment (it's never lasted longer than 5 minutes) but still really annoying and somewhat worrying.  Since my comcast service/modem is new (less than two weeks) is this likely the issue or do I have a bigger issue (captive portals don't sound good...).

Have you called 1-800 comcast and asked for a Tech visit yet?  That is what I would do at this point.

Re: So here's the problem

[ Edited ]

I am also having this problem.  It seems that random websites give me the "Forbidden" page at http://selfinstall4.comcast.com/captiveportal/index.html or will show a 403 or 404 error.  They all say something along the lines of "The requested URL ... was not found on this server."  If I wait for a few minutes then I can usually access the page.

I chatted with "Tech Support" but it was more like "Sales Support".  They did nothing to offer help except ask me to purchase their service plan.  It seems like an excellent way to scam people.  First, make web pages not load then ask for more money to solve the problem that they created.

EDIT:  It even blocked this website while I was submitting my response.

EDIT 2:  Turns out that Comcast's local DNS is f'ed up.  I switched my preffered DNS to OpenDNS.  To solve this problem just use OpenDNS.org or Google's DNS which is 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4  Stupid tech support wanted me to pay them for additional servieces because their DNS server is on the fritz.  Great customer service, morons.

Re: So here's the problem

I have had Comcast for 2 weeks now and I've had this problem too.  Exactly as you guys have described.  Its really starting to frustrate me.  Comcast needs to figure it out and fix it or somebody in their customer service and "tech support" teams are about to get some choice words over the phone.

Re: So here's the problem

Exactly! How do I configure open dns? I have also only had Comcast since July 16. The installer had to come back the day after he installed our t.v. And Internet equipment. I am getting error 403 and 404 also. Then when it looks like its going to connect, I get, "unable to verify certificate." I've called 3 times to their FREE tech support! They tried to charge me for support today. That's the last straw. My wife called AT&T Uverse today and begged them to come back and rehook up our service with them. It may be a slower connection but at least it's a connection. I just purchased a Linksys 3500 router because I was told Comcast ONLY rents the modem. Now I'll be stuck with it because Uverse gives you theirs free of charge.

Re: So here's the problem

Changing the DNS to Google's DNS solved it. Thanks. Just go into your TCP/IP settings and put that in.
