Turn a webcam into a security Cam/ "Built in baby sitter"

I have posted the following in etc section but some one suggested posting it here would be better. So the following is from http://forums.comcast.net/thread.jspa?threadID=32022&tstart=0 :

Some1
i have a Home network and an Intel Webcam on one of my computers. Would it be possible for me to start viewing my webcam from the other computers on my network?
Naddie:
MSN Messenger is pretty good at that
Some1:
ok then so is Yahoo Messenger and AIM and Netmeeting. I use those programs to talk with relatives outside my state but what i was looking for was something that would turn my webcam into a security camera. Something that i could start from other computer without any one being on the computer it is connected to. Something like Radmin exept instead of only seing what is happening on the computer screen, i could see what is happening around it.
Naddie:
Ohhhhh, I have not the slightest. Sorry. Hmmm, built in baby sitter, Cool

So do any of you have any idea of how to do this?

Well, if you have a second computer or can get a good used one for cheap, you could put that in the room that you want to monitor with MSN Messenger installed and put a web cam in there.
It would probably be cheaper to do it this way, they did have a cheaper one a couple years back and my still carry it in the stores.

Re: Turn a webcam into a security Cam/ "Built in baby sitter"

First of all, getting a new computer just for this will not be cheap. The problem with MSN messenger is that some one must invite the other person to view the webcam. What i was thinking of was more like you pass by another computer and just start viewing. Then if you go to another room with another computer, you start it there.

Network security Cameras are cool but i really do not want to waist a single penny on this. And beside if that tiny little security cam can give you this ability, why cant today's powerful computers.
I'm sure that some one or some company has though of this by now. If not then here is an idea where you could make at least a few thousands of dollars. I would be very thankful if you give me a tiny percentage of your profit from my idea. LOL

I have a Creative Ultra NX webcam that I use as a security camera in my apartment. It comes with monitoring software. When motion is detected, it will record a video for a specified period, then send you email or notify you on a web page. The cost is about 85 or 90.00. It also has very good resolution.

Re: Turn a webcam into a security Cam/ "Built in baby sitter"

I realize I'm responding to an old post but I'm using similar equipment for my setup: Creative Labe Live Ultra web cam. The motion sensor aspect works for me as you described. What I'm trying to do is successfully upload pages to Comcast using Remote Monitoring.

Has anybody successfully done this? The setup on the Creative Labs software is pretty easy:

The Tools->Settings section showed me how to set up my FTP settings. I have the following:

Upload: upload.comcast.com
User ID: vpcocco
Password: ******
Directory: ~/vpcocco/

The ftp server messages on the Comcast side show my user name and password being accepted. It's the Directory part that's bombing out: keeps coming back with 'invalid directory'. I've tried different variants of directory name like :~vpcoco/ and '/vcocco/'. Comcast even suggested I leave the the directory field blank on the Creative app. but that comes back with 'invalid number of arguments'.

I have read some security risks on the wireless webcams, too. Similar to Wardriving. Hobbyists will drive through your neighborhood with receivers that can pick up signals from the cameras and display the pictures from your camera on a laptop.
