FAQ's About Xfinity WiFi Home Hotspot

Your XFINITY Wireless Gateway broadcasts an additional “xfinitywifi” network signal for use with XFINITY WiFi. This creates an extension of the XFINITY WiFi network right in your home that any XFINITY Internet subscriber can use to sign in and connect. This XFINITY WiFi service is completely separate from your secure WiFi home network.

Will it cost anything?

Absolutely not. XFINITY WiFi is included with your existing Internet service.

How can visitors connect to XFINITY WiFi in my home?

Visitors who are XFINITY Internet subscribers can simply select the XFINITY WiFinetwork “xfinitywifi” on their device and open a Web browser to get started. They will be able to sign in with their Comcast Email or username and password.

Should I use my private WiFi network or the XFINITY WiFi Home Hotspot when I am at home?

We recommend using your own private WiFi network when you are at home and usingXFINITY WiFi when you are visiting a friend or traveling around town.

How does this improve my private WiFi network security?

The XFINITY WiFi service is designed to work on a separate network so that your home network remains entirely secure. By enabling guests to use XFINITY WiFi you won’t need to provide your private home WiFi network password to guests.

How do I disable/enable the XFINITY WiFi Home Hotspot feature?

We encourage all subscribers to keep this feature enabled as it allows more people to enjoy the benefits of XFINITY WiFi around the neighborhood. You will always have the ability to disable the XFINITY WiFi feature on your Wireless Gateway by calling1-800-XFINITY.

What happens if I choose to disable the Home Hotspot feature?

We encourage all subscribers to keep this feature enabled as it allows more people to enjoy the benefits of XFINITY WiFi around the neighborhood. You will always have the ability to re-enable the XFINITY WiFi feature on your Wireless Gateway by calling1-800-XFINITY.

What's good about an expanded XFINITY WiFi network?

With the new XFINITY WiFi Home Hotspot feature, you're helping to build a bigger network that can benefit your friends, neighbors and all XFINITY Internet customers. And it’s good for you, too. Because when you need a hotspot, it'll be there.

How many visitors can connect to the XFINITY WiFi Home Hotspot at one time?

Up to five devices can connect to the “xfinitywifi” signal simultaneously.

My guests are unable to connect to the XFINITY WiFi Home Hotspot. What is wrong?

Using a WiFi-enabled device, verify that the “xfinitywifi” signal is available and that the device is connected. Open a browser and attempt to surf, and the device will be directed to the XFINITY WiFi sign in page. Additional connection help is available here. If the issue persists, please call customer support at 1-800-XFINITY.

My device always connects to the “xfinitywifi” signal – how can I set my private home network as the default?

The majority of mobile devices and tablets will automatically connect to the last successfully connected WiFi network at a particular location. Check your device’s WiFi settings to make sure you are connected to your private home network. You can find additional information on how to prioritize your networks with our Connection Guides.

My friends and family are also XFINITY Internet subscribers – why don’t they see XFINITY WiFi in their homes?

This new feature enhancement is not yet available on all XFINITY Wireless Gateways or supported with all XFINITY Internet products. Wireless routers purchased at retail outlets don’t support the XFINITY WiFi service.

I cannot connect to my private home WiFi network or printer. What is wrong?

Check your device’s WiFi settings to make sure you are connected to your private home WiFi network. It is possible you may be connected to the “xfinitywifi” network instead.

Will my Internet slow down when someone connects to my XFINITY WiFinetwork?

The broadband connection to your home will be unaffected by the XFINITY WiFifeature. Your in-home WiFi network, as well as XFINITY WiFi, use shared spectrum, and as with any shared medium there can be some impact as more devices share WiFi. We have provisioned the XFINITY WiFi feature to support robust usage, and therefore, we anticipate minimal impact to the in-home WiFi network.

Easy. Return the garbage modem/router/WiFi "gateway" that Comcast

smuggled into your home under false pretenses. Their "modem upgrade"

claim is just a cover story. It's actually a Trojan horse with a clandestine

"neighborhood hotspot" concealed inside -- with ZERO benefit to you.

Swap it for a cable modem and add your own router. You have nothing

to lose except an anemic, single-band, WiFi access point that can hardly

throw a wireless signal across one medium-sized room.

...a lame Trojan horse?  Pure genius!

Re: FAQ's About Xfinity WiFi Home Hotspot

[ Edited ]

I was shocked to find out that the new modem they sent me (Arris TG862) broadcast a second signal they use as a public hotspot to sell wifi time to my neighbors.  If it was announced or disclosed it sure as heck wasn't in any of the information they sent me regarding my need to replace my old "obsolete" modem.  This is underhanded and sneaky in my opinion and I found a very simple way to disable this.

Go to xfinity or comcasts website, log in and under "my account" choose "user preferences".  From there you'll see a link under "Service Address" that says "Manage XFINITY WIFI" click on that and it brings up a window that allows you to disable the public xfinity wifi signal.  Note: you may need to go back to your modem and rename your private wifi network afterwards.

I feel xfinity didn't properly disclose this "new" hotspot service and I sure don't want to be used as a hotspot regardless of whether or not it affects my service or not.  I hope this helps all the rest of you that have found out about this as well.  Don't bother calling comcast, as usual, you'll be on hold for hours and when you talk to someone about this 90% of them have no clue (or pretend not to).  I just saved you hours of aggrevation.  You're welcome.

And one other point, my private wifi is definitely faster with xfinity wifi disabled.  I ran various tests through speakeasy speed test with it on and off at several points throughout one week and all of them showed a faster speed with it off.  So do yourself a favor and disable xfinity wifi.

Re: FAQ's About Xfinity WiFi Home Hotspot

Trojan horse is right, plus the garbage modem doesn't even broadcast in 5G.  And, they don't even include a battery back up like they used to.  Now they want to charge you $30 for one.  Man I hate Comcast, I really really do.
