I just got our new Xfinity gateway (model number SMCD3GNV) and I cannot find how to turn off the broadcasting of the SSID. I tried searching the user guide PDF for "broadcast" and nothing came up.
Disabling SSID broadcast is a minimally effective security step. Anyone wanting to know it can get it from captured wireless packets anyway, so if you can't find out how, I wouldn't sweat it.

On the left click on Gateway Then Connection. Then Wifi. On the left you will click on the edit link. On this screen you will have the option to change the ssid, security options, passphrase, and ssid broadcast.
I already had the broadcast button unchecked , but why can I still see my network from my gf's android phone?? I never gave her phone access to my network. I know you said that hackers can still get to my network by packet sniffing I would guess but what other ways can I keep my network secure?? Thanks for any help...

bspasek, there really is no better way to keep your network secure than by ensuring that you are utilizing WPA2 (certainly not WEP, and preferably not WPA), and have assigned a strong pass-key, not a predictable word or sequence.
As others have mentioned there really is no advantage at all to not broadcasting SSID. Any real hacker would not even be remotely deterred.
on the smcd3gmv there is not " edit" to the left of the wifi selection. I am still trying to figure how to disable SSID broadcast. It is the simplest way to stop people from jumping on your network. I am not worried about hardcore hackers.
