Linksys wireless router/PS3 problems

Hey all,

I just got a new Playstation 3 and have been having a ton of problems trying to get the wireless connection to work.  I set the PS3 up and gave it all of the correct information for my Linksys WRT54GX4  wireless router.  After I entered all of the info everything seemed to be working and then 10 minutes later I got an error on my screen saying something like "DNS error 80710102" and then my connection would fail.  I would turn off the PS3 and then turn it on and input all of the info and then the same thing would happen.  I started researching the issue and have yet to find a good answer.  I did try giving the PS3 a static IP and that seemed to work and then 30 minutes later I had the same problem.  I have a laptop that I connect wirelessly and it doesn't seem to have problems?  Maybe I am not on-line that long with it though.  Here are some things I have seen on the internet about fixing the problem:

1 - works fine, do nothing
2 - Disable SSID
3 - use a static IP
4 - use a static IP and a DMZ
5 - use a static IP and port range forwarding or port triggering (do I open TCP, 10070-10080 and UDP 10070 and 6000-6999?)
6 - reduce the MTU on router to 1365, reduce beacon interval to 50 and RTS and Frag. threshold by 40 each.
7 - changing channel broadcast number to 9

Of these I have tried using a static IP, opening the prot range forwarding and changing the broadcast number.  None of these have worked.  This is what is bothering me.  I do have a connection that works pretty good for 30 minutes or so.  To me that means that it isn't a problem on my end it is something that Comcast is doing.  I read one post here that mentioned that "most routers will act as DNS forwarders, passing your DNS request on to the servers the router gets from Comcast, and it is conceivable that Comcast could change the IP addresses of it's DNS servers, so if you hard code those and Comcast does change them, you will lose DNS resolution."  To me that seems like the answer to my problems.  If that is true is there any way to fix the problem with my Playstation 3?  Does anyone have any great ideas?  I was thinking of making a DMZ for the IP address I assigned my PS3 but then I am leaving my PS3 pretty open to attacks.  Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Linksys wireless router/PS3 problems

try using hard coded DNS IPs on the PS3, using the OpenDNS servers (208.67.222.222, and 208.67.220.220).

I forget if there is a way to check wireless signal levels on the PS3, but are you sure you are not losing connectivity? Do you have any cordless phones (2.4GHz type) near the PS3?

Re: Linksys wireless router/PS3 problems

My signal strength is between 90 and 99%.  I used to have a phone nearby but I moved it.  Someone else mentioned using the openDNS thing but it seemed a little sketchy.  By using someone else's DNS's other then Comcast's doesn't it seem like they can monitor everything I do and even get into my system if they want?  I don't know much about this stuff so I could be way off?

using OpenDNS servers for name resolution introduces nor security risks at all.

Re: Linksys wireless router/PS3 problems

I suspect you do NOT have a DNS issue at all, and that you are actully just loosing you connection to the router.    Changing the IP address to something static, or port forwarding is going to have NO effect on things, and changing the DNS server IP's is not going to help a wireless connection issue.

But do try the open DNS servers and let us know if that helps, although I suspect not.  And if it does, then there's a good chance your router simply needs to be reset to factory defaults and any custom settings reapplied.  It's pretty common for power outages and such to sometimes cause settings problems.

Try a direct ethernt connection, any better?  If so, the problem is wireless signal related and you can focus on that.

If this is a connectivity problem, try other channels besides 9, they range from 2 to 11, typically, try them each in turn.  Change the antenna orientation or router position (get it up higher and away from any walls).  try high gain antennas, etc.

PS. and don't mess with the MTU, that's a real bad idea except  in very special circumstances.  You're only going to get worse and worse performance the lower you go.

Re: Linksys wireless router/PS3 problems

This Thread at the Sony Playstation network indicates it may be a problem with the firmware on the PS3

Re: Linksys wireless router/PS3 problems

Its not a problem with PS3 or PS3 firmware. Something else in Comcast is blocking this.. I have tried this with my AT&T MiFi card and its working fine.

For me, when i connect to my comcast, my wired as well as wireless connection giving same DNS 80710102 error.
