Does the laptop have a "N" capable wireless adapter installed ?
If it does, and you decide to go the wireless route, I'd go with an "N" capable router. It's a newer and faster standard than "G".

I did not mention a Wireless N Router because it would be a waste of money as far as using it with the Dell d600 laptop. It only has Wireless 802.11b built in, Wireless G is your standard right now. However Wireless N will support Wireless B just more money to be using for this laptop, however will keep you ahead of the game for awhile at least.

A bit of a contradiction ?

What he's saying is that there won't be any immediate benefit to using a Wireless N router, but it may be a good investment for the future, as Baric pointed out. N routers aren't much more expensive than G routers.

Looked at N Routers just yesterday, 75 - 120 dollars and G Routers as little as 25 dollars to 40 dollars (Walmart) So to me, if I was using a laptop that has Wireless B, I would not buy a N Router, because to me that is a waste of money, however I am the type that does not go all crazy to get the latest hardware/software, As long as I can browse the internet, keep in touch with family via Windows Live, and email im one happy camper, I could honestly say I would be happy with Dialup because I can do everything I do with a dialup connection, however I have 6 computers, 2 of them being laptops and 1 is a Netbook all online, my wife likes to play games, so we have cable internet
Man I sound OLD. Only 27 ![]()
Thats where I was getting at with just sticking with a G Router

In future I'd prefer that you don't put words in my mouth Barmar.. But right now, yes, that is indeed the crux of it.

Well I suspect that that says it all. Including *your*, opinion.

Aren't facts and accuracy also important to be posted in a help forum such as this ?

If you go to the question asked......
I purchased a new laptop (Dell D600) and would like to know what kind of router you would recommend to set up a network with my desktop computer (Dell Vostro 200)????
Thats what I (MY SELF) would recommend, that was just my opinion. Other people would have different recommendations... There is no right or wrong answer for this question.
The question never asked for one persons recommendation.

I looked on the web and I saw some N routers around $50. However, if you buy the cheapest, that may be what you get.

Newegg even had a D-Link model for $40, but I think that one lacked features like gigabit LAN ports.

Are you sure that you know whom you were replying to ?? ![]()
May I suggest that you try to be more selective when adding multiple quotes to your posts...

wifes parents have a d-link wireless router, its good as trash, always having to reset it. good thing it is only used when family comes over with their laptops.
Hmm I have a Dlink DiR-655 that I have had to reset once since initial set up. It's been flawless. I have set on my neighbor's porch with my laptop and gotten great signal (It's not next door, it's three houses down.. about 40 yards from my house.

They might of improved the Wireless N version
When you log into the router, does it load fast or does it lag? The G router my wifes parents have is very laggy, its like the routers is clear across the united states on a dialup connection. Then you will notice if your connected via wireless it will boot you and on the wired comp it says 'local only' on the networks status, so then you gotta reset it. And this is everytime you got to loginto the router, it will sit, maybe load or crash, or if someone is on wireless too long.
