Re: Turn on IPv6 on comcast modem

[ Edited ]

What's your HomeGrorup got to do with IPv6 on the modem?

There is nothing you need to do to the gateway to enable a HomeGroup, that's purely between Windows 7 systems behind the gateway.  Perhaps if you took a minute to better explain what you want to do and what doesn't work.

Re: Turn on IPv6 on comcast modem

The win 7 troubleshooters say ipv6 has to be enabled for my homegroup to work. I went to Microsoft and ran there fix it, the report came back that ipv6 needed to be enabled.  I just did a windows recovery trying to get this to work and it still won't.  My printer spooler keeps my wife's computer and our laptops from printing on the network. My adapter has IPv6 checked. I have turned on to automatic any service dealing with homegroup that I know of, I have been working on this for weeks I have tried to set up tunneling but I don't think I have succeeded.

Re: Turn on IPv6 on comcast modem

I have no clue what you are trying to do here..  What specific problem or task are you trying to accomplish?

denwarf said:

If by Win7 troubleshooters you mean Control Panel -> Troubleshooting, describe exactly which one you ran, and why.

I went to Microsoft and ran there fix it

Ok, which one of the zillions of fixits did you run?  And why?

the report came back that ipv6 needed to be enabled

Meaningless until we know what you ran.

I just did a windows recovery trying to get this to work and it still won't

So I assume whatever mysterious thing you are trying to fix used to work?

My printer spooler keeps my wife's computer and our laptops from printing on the network

Are you trying to say you have a shared printer on your computer but no one else can print to it?  Again, no real information to go on here.

My adapter has IPv6 checked.

Great, so does mine, but that doesn't really mean anything unless someone is trying to use IPv6 ONLY.

I have turned on to automatic any service dealing with homegroup that I know of

That's just scary, unless you really kow what you are doing, messing around with the services is a recipe for disaster.

I have tried to set up tunneling

Why are you trying to setup tunneling?  What IPv6 ONLY server are you attempting to use?  Tunneling is a way to use IPv6 over an IPv4 connection.

I admit I have little idea what you are trying to do here or why you have done the things you have done, but it sounds like you way off course here.  Forget IPv6.  Step back and tell us what you are trying to do, or fix, or change.  Describe your exact setup, computer and OS, post the "ipconfig /all" output on all systems involved.  If trying to use a printer, post the exact make and model and how it is setup and connected to your network, etc, and what prints and what doesn't.

I can not copy troubleshooer results it says the information is in "homegrouplog.etl" which I can not read.

The network troubleshooter says IPv6 must be enabeled and it keeps telling me to go to adapter settings and check IPv6 checkbox, which it already is.

I will post this and try to get a print out why I can not get homegroup to work.

Thank you

Here is that same procedure spelled out in more detail by one of your customer support representatives:

1. Temporarily disable Firewall and third party antivirus program on the computer for a test.

2. Verify relevant services

=========================

a. Click "Start", type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in Search Bar and press Enter.

Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

b. Right click the "Peer Networking Grouping" service and choose Properties.

c. Please check if the service is started; if not, please click the Start button and see if it works.

d. You may also choose Automatic next to Startup type.

e. Click OK.

f. Please repeat the above steps with another service: PNRP Machine Name Publication Service.

3. Modify IPv6 registry key to enable IPV6

==========================

a. Click Start, type regedit in Search Bar, and then click regedit in the Programs list.

Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.

b. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\TCPIP6\Parameters

c. Check whether the "DisabledComponents" registry key exists. If so, let's move on the next steps.

d. Double click the "DisabledComponents" registry key and modify the value to 0.

(If the key doesn't exist, please create the key above and assign the value 0)

e. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
Thanks, Gloria

Hi Wuzabobcat. Please post some additional information about what you have done so far. For example, did you create a homegroup but you can't join it? Or were you unable to even create it?
Thanks Gloria Boyer Microsoft

Gloria, thanks for responding so quickly. I am not able to create a Homegroup on my PC. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate on my desktop and Windows 7 Home Premium on my laptop, but get the same message when I try to create a Homegroup. My desktop and  router provide access for my wireless  notebook to access the internet. Ipv4 is checked in both, but if I remove it, I lose internet access and wireless LAN access altogether.. Thanks!

Hi again. I haven't given up on you. I'm trying to get more info from the feature team about this issue. Stay tuned.
Meanwhile, I just want to make sure you have looked at a network connection's properties and you see both IPv4 and IPv6 there, and both are checked. Is that right?
Thanks, Gloria

I have EXACTLY the same problem, except I am running Win-7 Home Premium on both.  The Homegroup setup stalls with the message "IPv6 must be enabled".  I have IP4P and IP6P both checked on the LAN Connector on the desktop (64 bit) and the Wireless Connector on the laptop (32 bit).

Gloria, Both the ipv4 and ipv6 are checked. I can access the internet from both computers (laptop and desktop) without problems but not able to create or join a homegroup. I can remote access the desktop (main) from the laptop, but I cannot see the other printers on what was my network when I was using Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate before upgrading the Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium and the Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate. The message that I get is:

your network connection must have IPv6 enabled to create or join a homegroup. To enable IPv6, start the Homegroup troubleshooter. When I run the troubleshooter it is unable to identify the problem. The Local area connection says the network cable is unplugged (on the wireless laptop)

I am trying to connect a new laptop to a wireless  network.  The router and modem are connected to a windows xp computer.  I get the same message you indicate about ipv6 and the troubleshooter can't resolve the problem.  I also get a message about a cable must not be connected.  The windows xp computer is working properly and has internet access.  The wireless router is connected correctly and all the lights are lighting properly.  However I can't get the laptop to connect to the network.  Anyone have any answers?

Hi folks. I'm still waiting to get some answers from the feature team, but in the meantime I found something that MIGHT help. If you feel comfortable editing the registry, set a restore point, and then try this:
http://www.windowsreference.com/networking/enabledisable-some-or-all-of-ipv6-capabilities-in-windows...
Let me know the result, please.
Warning: If you have not edited the registry before or don't feel comfortable doing so, please do NOT do this. Wait for further information.
Thanks. Keep me posted.

Is it necessary to follow this procedure with EACH computer that is going to be in the homegroup, or only with the one being used to establish it?

IT WORKS, IT WORKS!  I followed the instructions precisely and IT WORKS! easy to do! Just make sure that you turn your firewall back on. Once you set up the first computer and turn the other one on, you'll need to wait a few minutes until  #2 spots #1, but after that a breeze! Thank you ST> GLORIA!

Re: Turn on IPv6 on comcast modem

OK, so from all this I assume that you are getting some kind of error when you try to create a homegroup?  If so, what is it exactly and and exactly what do you do to create the HomeGroup?  I can see from your ipconfig output that you do have an IPv6 address and a Teredo tunnel.

What is output at the Command Prompt when you run this command:

reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip6\Parameters /v DisabledComponents

On my Win7 systems, it says "ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value." Which is a normal error, and my HomeGroup runs fine.  It turns out the the HomeGroup feature in Windows 7 requires IPv6, which I was unaware of (boy, I be oblivious sometimes). So from the error you post about the sharing problem, I assume it's failing because the Homegroup is NOT working (which makes sense), so we have to find out WHY the Homegroup is not working.  If you are in fact getting an error about IPv6 being necessary and not present, then the first place I would look is the above command.  If DisableComponents is present in the Registry and anything other than 0, that means that IPv6 will be disabled (at least partially), in spite of your checkbox settings in the individual connection settings.  The quick fix is to change this key in the Registry to 0 and try again.  A lot of people seem to be having this problem even after they change it because some piece of software on the computer keeps changing it back and the change never sticks.  Typical culprits are 3rd party firewalls like Zone Alarm, Norton, and McAfee.  If you are running an old version of some 3rd party firewall, I encourged you to get rid of it immediately.  Behind your router's firewall, it's of dubious use and the built-in Windows firewall is usually more than sufficient for most needs.

Now, if Disabled Components is not present or is 0 (and stays) 0, then we need to look elsewhere.  What are the outputs of the following two commands?

sc query p2psvc

I am using windows firewall and essentials, I have created the homegroup three times, no problem joining, I take the published password to each machine and have them join, I fill out the homegroup form allowing discovery and all the right answers.

When I open explorer and click on homegroup I get "No other homegroup computers are currently available" I make sure my wife's computer is awake. I have run the homegroup troubleshooter several dozen times from both computers, on my computer I usually get, go to network troubleshooter and it tells me IPv6 must be turned on.  It tells me to go to adapter and check the IPv6 box which of course it already is.  I have uninstalled IPv6 and reinstalled on the adapter setting.

I have gone into the gateway settings and IPv6 is blacked out and I can't turn it on?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: Turn on IPv6 on comcast modem

Excuse me for jumping in'

1- a work around to connect to a homegroup is to connect an etherment cable directly from the lap top  to your router.  Once you enter the password from the desktop(you will see immediate connecticvitiy ) you can remove the ethernet cable and homegroup will continue to function. I find using a flashdrive to be easier to ocasionally transfer files.

2- May I ask help with a problem now;

When I sent pix to Comcast from SkyDrive, they flash and disappear. Any work arounds or ideas?

Re: Turn on IPv6 on comcast modem

Thanks for the response, I am on a ethernet network and at home both of my laptops are pluggd into the cable, I can not get homegroupe to se anything from any of my computers.

I have never used skydrive, Look in your comcast setup and see what the maximum size you can send pictures is and if too small increase it.  Sorry that is the best I can do with that one, If it is showing up in your outbox it is probabley comcast related if not it's skydive
