I have a new kindle fire that cannot connect to my netgear wireless router. It tries to obtain an ip address but never gets there. If I assign a static ip address it connects but you still can't go to any website. I am using wpa-psk security but I don't know what that means or the implications of changing it. I'd like not to hose access to my router from my phone or laptop. Thanks much.

Is your router expecting to have the MAC number of the Kindle?
Here's a link to Kindle WiFi troubleshooting:

update the firmware on your router. Also try wiping the Kindle networking setup and try again. I would recommend WPA2PSK over WPA.
