I had the internet (20M/4M package) installed about a week ago with a motorola 6121 modem and a belkin n+ wireless router. The tech installed a new line from the outside cable box to my house and said that the signal coming into the house was good. He also said that the modem downloaded new firmware upon installation. When the tech left my house, I was getting 0.5 d/l and 3.5 u/l speeds. He said the problem was with my equipment - not the signal.
Within 36 hours, without changing any hardware or software, my d/l speed jumped to 25.0 and my u/l speed remained constant.
Now, about a week later, my d/l speed has been at 5.0 or less for 48 hours.
Can someone please help me understand what's going on with my download speeds and how to keep them at >20M?
Thank you.

I have also experienced a reduced download speed. Sometimes while downloading the speed will increase dramatically and the revert to a crawl. Does anyone have any ideas?

I've been having a similar problem, though it's only started happening in the last few months. My dl speeds never exceed 7mbps now, ul speeds around 2-4. I tried an online chat with support, but she had no idea what was wrong... everything was green on her end. I decided it was probably my router, since it was old and had been broken once already, but a new router produced the exact same results.
I serioulsy doubt we'll get any real support from comcast on this one though.

my sister had the same problem after years of great speed and reliability. Resetting the modem from Comcasts side fixed it.
