I have an comcast modem and a d link wireless router hooked on.  Problem is every thing is in my basement, i need to extend the range onto the second floor.

Do i buy a comcast certified modem/wireless gateway....and then just plug it into a cable outlet upstairs??

I am confused after reading some related posts.

No do not get a comcast gateway they are useless and you will have more problems then you are having now.

If I put it in Bridge mode can i still not have to run ethernet cable?....its to far away.

As an actual potential solution for your range issue you could try using "Powerline Ethernet Adapters". You can Google them for more info.
