IPv6 Preparation: 10.6.5 Recommended - Action for Mac Users

[ Edited ]

I am sure many of you are aware of the coming transition to IPv6, and the corresponding global exhaustion of IPv4 (the current form of Internet addressing). In light of this, we'd like Mac users to be aware of this...

For reference, check out http://www.fud.no/ipv6/ and scroll down to "The Mac OS X Problem."

In order to best prepare for going to IPv6 and accessing dual stack sites successfully (even over IPv4) on World IPv6 Day (6/8/2011) and afterwards, you need to ensure you have the most recent version of the OS. So, if you are a Mac OS X user, you should be sure you are running 10.6.5 or later

It is not known if 10.5 or 10.4 will get automatic updates with the recent Apple IPv6-related fix in it (we doubt it, as it does not appear to be Apple's policy to update older OS versions). So if you were considering an OS upgrade for your Mac, maybe this is the extra motivation needed. ;-)

When Comcast lights up the San Francisco bay area with IPv6, I can boot every version of Mac OS X and let you know what happens. :smileylaugh:

It will affect any and all operating systems (OSs) that use the internet.  It is a change in the IP format, which is what google.com, cnn.com and all other websites translate to in numbers format.

Just ran a test on IPv6 setup.

Went into my router and saw a n IPv6 tab.

Clicked on IPv6 and then clicked on Autodetect.

Saw an IPv6 address fro the WAN side and the Lan Side

Went to a Dos Prompt and did an ipconfig and see both IPv4  and IPv6 addresses

Did a Ping -6 ipv6.google.net and got a good ping

Did a ping -6 iipv3.comcast.net and gailed

did a ping -6 ipv6. comcast.com and got good ping

Opened IE8 and browsed ipv6.google.com and ipv6.comcast.com

Looks like some sites are already setup to work with IPv6

Looks like Comcast DHCP servers are already serving up IPv6 addresses along with the IPv6

Also looks like my Vista based Laptop comes out of the box with IPv6 ensabled

MacIntosh folks will want to use the command ifconfig instead of iconfig to look for the ipv5 addresses

Not sure of the Mac equivalent for the IPv6 png command of ping -6

Anyone have OS X 10.5? If so -- go run our test at http://test-ipv6.comcast.net. We're considering 'helping' certain users that need to upgrade too Snow Leopard (10.6).

I have different vintages of Macs and can run all Mac OS versions for testing.*

I just need Comcast to roll out IPv6 to the San Francisco bay area. :smileylaugh:
