I now know much more then i ever wanted to learn about client email and comcast . But still interested in learning answer to the problem .

You and me both. But at this point the only way we're going to make progress is if Beth can get Comcast's attention.

Be sure to stress the results of the Telnet test you did, if you can find anyone who understands what that is and what it means. The test failure trumps all "it's Apple's fault" and "you have something configured wrong" objections.

That only works if I can get past Comcast's first line of defense -- these "Comcast Customer Care Specialist"s have clearly been trained that there is only one reason why email isn't working (i.e. client misconfiguration), and wouldn't have a clue if I threw down the Telnet card.
But yes, once I can get to the next level, you'd think that would be helpful. When I paid $50 for one-time access to a second level person for help with this problem (which ticks me off, but I suppose Comcast sees this as a value-added service) he saw the Telnet results, but decided that meant that there was something wrong with the Apple OS.
Yes, really. And no, they wouldn't give me my $50 back.

Could you please send me the email address in a Private message?
Private Messages (PM’s)
At the top of each Forum page you will see a small white envelope
This is the icon for Private Messages, referred to as ‘PM’s’. A Private Message is a way to communicate in private, to another User, Moderator, or Administrator out of public view in the Forums.
The white envelope turns to yellow when you receive a PM.
To open a PM to read it, double click on the yellow envelope. If you click on the white envelope a window will open with tabs for your Private Message Inbox, Sent Messages, Friends, Ignored Users, and Compose new Message. You can also access this area by clicking on the Username in a Thread or post. By default, Private Messages are enabled. You can disable this feature in My Settings>Preferences> Private Messenger.

Any new updates ?

Well, sort of.
I heard yesterday from a nice fellow from Rick's office who said he'd get back to me by Monday. I haven't heard anything more from Larry.

Interesting, what was the issue? Yes, I'm nosy... ;-)

I can report that the miracle has indeed occurred!!!!! No fiddling with ports, nothing. I just punched in her email address and password and It Just Worked. ![]()
I can report that my wife is (as I write this) gleefully sending email and giggling as it makes the Mac Mail SENTwhooshing sound.
I too would very much like to know what the heck the problem was!!!
I don't suppose there's any way to recover the $50 that I futilely spent on Comcast Paid Support for this issue . . . .

It Works! It Works!!! :^)

Oooh, it gets even better. I don't often use my iPhone to send email on my Comcast account, but I tried to earlier this week and it failed. I just chalked it up to a glitch, and didn't put two & two together until just now -- now my wife's Mac Mail is working fine, but my iOS device can't send email to Comcast. Unbelievable.
It can't talk to the smtp server, it just gets a Port 995 timeout. So the fix (whatever that was) broke something else. I sure wouldn't think that OS X and iOS would use different protocols to talk to mail servers, but that's the implication, and the implication is that I have to choose one or the other, but not both. Port 995 has nothing to do with SMTP so if your SMTP config on the iPhone says to use port 995 (which is the SSL secured POP3 port), it WON'T work. I would delete the account and just recreate it, the default values the iPhone uses are fine with Comcast as well as secure.
03-29-2012 10:47 PM
I can delete the account and recreate it -- my point is that it worked just fine for two years, then Comcast "fixed" it. Okay, I just did.
According to the iPhone, it's using Port 995 for the smtp server and Password authentication.
The new account trick did work -- I was able to send an email. So my worst nightmare (that Comcast broke it) appears to be unfounded.
We'll chalk it up to being an amazing coincidence that it broke at the same moment that Comcast had their fingers in my account.

Glad you got it working. SMTP on port 995 should NEVER have worked, but who knows. There is a possible scenario where the settings get changed without you doing it directly. Depending on your sync settings in iTunes, it's possible to sync your email account definitions from Mail to your iPhone/iPad or what have you. If such a sync happened during one of the many config changes you have tried during this whole saga, you might have ended up with those potentially wrong settings on your phone. Just a thought...

After one week of Comcast's " tech experts trying to figure out why I couldn't send email but receive it on my Mac, I followed Joel's step by step configuration of setting up email acct and switched to a different port, I am now receiving email...Thanks! Why doesn't Comcast IT have a clue about a simoe fix??

We've been trying to train them for close to ten years... *sigh* Glad you found your solution here :-)

I'm having this same problem, but it has just occurred. My MacMail worked fine for as long as I've had the computer, then stopped when I tried to add another account that had a lot of emails in it.
Only thing I did was to rename the 2 accounts to tell the difference in Mail program. When I tried to import messages form the new account it got bogged down and I force quit Mail. When I reopened it said server couldn't be connected. Deleted both accounts and started over, trying to create a new account.
No ports work...all say timed out. All settings stayed the same--I have no idea why it's now not working. Reading past posts I don't hold much hope for figuring out what can be wrong but thought I might add a post here. The one thing I can say is that I'm running an old OX 10.5.8 but I'm not sure why it would work fine then not when I try to add new account. Connection doctor has connection to server as green dot.
Thanks for any help.

I remember having problems at work several years ago using Mac Mail with an IMAP account with thousands of messages, and it may have been when I was running 10.5. I think that old version of Mail just gets bogged down when dealing with large mailboxes.

FWIW, I found this thread because my Macbook Air has a problem with Comacast email, but only when I use Firefox! The opening window displays the top of the Inbox, but if i try to open the entire Inbox, or any particular emails, or start a "New" one, nothing happens. All I get is a return to the opening window! It's like trying to open a Playboy issue when someone has glued the centerfold pages together. Very frustrating! However, the very simple workaround for non-techie me is to not use Firefox for email (though I prefer it for everything else), and instead use Safari for the Xfinity connection, which works just fine (except for occasional blank content when I try to Reply to an email...but usually works the second time). Also, I don't have the problem when using my iMac, so I can use Firefox for Xfininity just fine on my iMac. Maybe I'll call Comcast about this, but I sure won't spend a lot of time on it. Thanks for the opp. to post this.

up to now I have not had a big problem with comcast mail. I could get mail most of the time. I have mac 10.6.8 on a net work with 1 other mac, this is the gateway computer connected to airport extreme. I started having a problem getting mail with comcast, erroe messages. that the connection wa not right I rechecked what I had put down could not find an error. ( also have mail and aol accounts working ok) I added another comcast account to see if it would work it did not help so I took it off the account list. Now the connections for aol and mail are all green and ok, but the account with comcast will not work the connection MD is all red. I have tried several ports and ssl on or off . the connection is still all red. Any suggestions?
