Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

Help!!!
I am using Mail with no problems until today. All of a sudden when I hit 'send' the mail is going to the 'OUT' box and staying there. When I use AOL the mail goes out normally. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

Exactly the same problem here, though it started several days ago. Outgoing mail usually, though not always, hangs up in the outbox.

Eventually I get an error message indicating a failure to connect to smtp.comcast.net. Sometimes the message says that there are too many connections from my IP address (not from anything I'm doing), sometimes it says there's a failure to connect to smtp server (null).

Anyone with any ideas?

Thanks,

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

I just started getting this problem yesterday. I've tried connecting to different networks - i.e. AOL, various internet cafes, etc. - and the OSX Mail application retrieve mail from my comcast and .Mac accounts fine, but gives me errors when trying to SEND anything. It generally tells me there's a problem with smtp.comcast.net and tells me "Authentication Required". I haven't been able to find any help anywhere.

If enough Mac users complain, maybe Comcast will tell us what's up? Have any users with this problem had trouble with other mail apps like Entourage, Mozilla or Outlook Express?

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

I have been having problems with Entourage, but oddly I am having the OPPOSITE problem.

I use Warped.com as my webhost, and have always just used mail.warped.com as my SMTP server. A week or two ago, that stopped working: I keep getting "Relay access denied." As it turns out, Comcast has shut down all kinds of ports to outgoing traffic (because of Blaster worm, thanks Microsoft), including Port 25 to SMTP. So now I can ONLY send mail on smtp.comcast.net. The only option I have selected is Requires SSL, everything else default (default port 25, no user authentication).

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

this also happened to me. I was sending mail just fine for weeks and then it started to get stuck in the outbox. If you are using internet explorer, go to edit menu, preferences, email. Make sure "sending mail" is smtp.comcast.net . That worked for me.

Same problem here, can't send e-mail. The error message I'm getting is that mail can't be sent via port 25. Any idea which port comcast uses?

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

Having the same trouble. I have fiddled around and just using the word "mail" in the outgoing box works just fine. Still doesn't always go out but it is another way to try.

This is absolutely rediculous and I almost won't tolerate it anymore.

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

same problem. Plus my e-mail has not been working. I looked at the forum yesterday and some said to delate all the mail in the comcast.com storage. This worked for one day and now my mail is not coming in again. I tried to contact comcast via the instant messaging help and my experience was extremely lousy. The thing said, "help session ended, consultant left the room". What does that mean. I am ready to switch from Comcast.

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

I am have the same problem as all of those above.

My question is who is you competion?

That is who do you fear. I have been a user since @home days and I am tied of this constant screwing around. I have been a Mac owner since 1984 so I know how to use my Mac. Getting an answer from the Comcast customer service is not possible based on my expereince. Email does not work - no answer. When you call on the phone they don't know anything about Mac. When you stop at the local office they say they don't handle this type of question. I am ready to find another service provider.

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

I've had my outgoing hang before. Usually I can fix it by clicking the "get mail" button, then going into the outbox, opening the message and clicking the "send now" button.

I hope this helps someone...

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

I have had the same problem and Comcast has been little help...it just seems to go away eventually. I have never had problems with my Mac's mail program until I signed up with Comcast....but there is no competition in our area...sigh...

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

I'm having this problem today, September 26, and can't send anything through Eudora Light. I can send comcast mail via webmail and can receive anything but I can't send email my regular way. I'm hoping there's a solution in this thread...if not, could anyone help? My settings have not changed.

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

I have three different mail applications on my computer (Eudora, Mail and entourage). Each of them will not work with the SMTP. I can get my mail perfectly well but nothings outgoing except through one of my other e-mail accounts.

I'm having the same problem with Eudora. I can receive mail but not send it. The error message is "server not responding."

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

Thanks! It worked for me to. Apparently comcast made some changes that affected us Mac Users. Originally, the setting was mail.comcast.net. I found I had to chance the incoming as well to pop.comcast.net once I changed the outgoing.

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

Comcast must have made some changes. I was working with mail.comcast.net for all my settings with no problems until the 25th of September. You need to change your incoming to pop.comcast.net and your outgoing to smtp.comcast.net. This should resolve all your e-mail problems.

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

I've changed my settings as well to pop.comcast.net, tried it with and without ssl with no luck. Tried it back with original mail.comcast.net to no avail. Outgoing is smtp.comcast.net with no luck. Mail.app asks to try mail.attbi.com and likewise has no luck. I find there is no way to delete this server from the options.
comcast is less than helpful and quite indignant about being asked.."Unplug your modem....." all the typical stuff. No luck. I wonder if it's related to using 10.2.8? Any ideas?

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

I must amend my prior statement. I had a typo in the outgoing server window. Instead of smtp, I had smpt. Operator error. Probably worth checking out as it looks right from afar.

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

I have the same problem. I usually get an error message that smtp.comcast.net cannot use port 25.

It all started last Friday, and I have to send all mail from the comcast web page which I detest.

I receive mail fine but have to switch to dial up to send mail through earthlink.

Looks like its time to cancel my service.

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

If you are using OS-X mail or some of the other programs you might try using authentication for sending mail by checking the box tat says use authentication for smtp and enter you comcast user name and password.

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

This is a totally random, sporadic problem. I tried lots of fixes to no avail, only to have it clear up on its own.

I'm guessing that it happens when Comcast's mail server is overloaded. The usual message I get is that Comcast's smtp doesn't recognize the recipients. Of course, it recognized the same recipients (my mailing list) lots of times prior to the problem, indicating a transient glitch on the server end.

It also may be due to Comcast screwing with their filters or security. But don't bother asking Comcast for help ... they only answer Outlook questions.

Just wait awhile and re-send. You may have to wait a few minutes, or hours, or days. It will clear up on its own: you just have to endure the frustration of sitting around with a full "Out" box.

I suppose all systems have this now and then. AOL just disconnects people when the server is busy. Our T1 line at school got overloaded once, and just sent all the messages into limbo. Maybe we should yell at Comcast to add more servers?

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

I am having the same problem with entorouge and mail as well as outlook express. I have spent 5 or 6 hours on the phone with their technical support people, and they are sending someone out to the house on Monday to try and fix the problem. I am not paying for a router-- this is their problem and they need to fix it if they expect people to pay for service. Maybe they will be smart and bring me a router.

I just tried restarting my Mac and when it started up Software Update said I had new software to install(Quicktime 6.4 and iSync 1.3) I installed them and restarted my Mac again. When it started up this time all the emails in my out box were sent.

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

The answer is smtp.comcast.net for the smtp settings to get your outgoing mail to work in whatever program you use... below is my horror story of today November 16th the longest day in my life - 13 hours of hell - on a Sunday no less - thanks Comcast.

First off, I love all Mac Users, and today November 16th will go down in history for me. I woke up at 9am on a beautiful Sunday morning to check my email accounts - I build web sites for over six clients to see what updates I needed to make. I received my average amount of update requests and went to reply to my clients - to find out none and I mean none of my eight email accounts would let me send out emails... I freaked out, unplugged my airport, unplugged my router, unplugged everything, restarted everything, called apple, called my host company for my clients web sites, called comcast, called apple again... now this had turned into a $100 day - just in phone calls. Finally I got so desperate I reinstalled my Jaguar OS to see if that was the problem... still no dice. Finally I reinstalled my comcast software and found this forum - thank GOD. The short answer which is taking me a while to get to is this:

Go to your Apple Mail or Outlook Express, etc. Preferences and change whatever your smtp settings are to smtp.comcast.net - it does not matter what your address is - you must change it to comcast to make it work. I know this sounds scary and really weird, but it works...

In short - Apple needs to develop one more great tool - a high speed provider that is nation wide for just Mac users - so that everyone can envy our sweet machines and online speeds.

I hope this helps everyone.

THANK YOU! I just did as you suggested and the problem was solved. I have been struggling with this problem since Comcast took over from AT&T. I'd like a dollar for every hour I've wasted trying to resolve this issue without success. Thanks again.

incoming mail from Comcast not arriving

I know many people in this forum have discussed not being able to send messages out, but I've had a problem since Saturday, November 15 where I can't receive any mail FROM Comcast (using mail.comcast.net). I can find my messages when I access their Web-based mail, but not when using the Macintosh Mail application. I have mail through another server, and I receive those just fine. I called the Comcast help desk, but no one was available to answer Mac questions.

Has anyone else encountered problems receiving mail? I can send out mail (via smtp.comcast.net) w/no problems.

Re: incoming mail from Comcast not arriving

When the same thing happened to me I found a thread in the apple discussion boards that talked about this issue with comcast. Folks there recommended moving any messages from PayPal to a "message read" type of folder. (take it out of your in box, trash it even if you dont need a copy). Once I did that, everything worked fine for me.

Ah, PayPal... that really helps a *lot*. One of my messages in my Webmail inbox was from PayPal, which I deleted earlier today.

I'll check my messages from my machine when I get home tonight and see if this remedied the problem.

Thank you very much!

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

This happened a few month's ago to me. Do you have an email from PayPal in your in box? Delete it and the problem may go away. Believe it or not this was the solution before. My outgoing mail would not work for days. I read about the PayPal thing on the boards and tried it. It worked. Also, go into your Disk Utility under Utilities and repair permissions on your volume. This is something that needs to be done about once a month.

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

i called comcast tonite and they said the same thing..this effected mac users first. cause i have been having this problem for about five days now. i wish i would have known this mac section was here earlier before i went posting in the pc one and people told me it was outlook.
i'm still a bit mad though. because they told me that since the mac users were only 2% of thier clients that they weren't worried about it till it spread to the other 98% of thier clients. this should have been fixed days ago. but i'm glad something is finally getting done about it.

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

I had the same problem. After about 20 calls to comcast and their tech support couldn't give me a straight answer I went into mail. Preferences>Accounts>Server Settings... Delete the number that's in the Server port area. This will automatically come back when you restart Mail. Quit mail then open it back up and you should be able to start sending mail. Hope this helps.

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

I read all the other horror stories and I admit I'm reluctant to change anthing that was working before -

Comcast set this machine up (i Book) when they installed the broad band service. When I looked in my outlook express accounts I found that the outgoing server was listed as smpt - I changed it to smtp and everything then worked ok again.

I am not however encouraged by the apparent lack of intelligent support for the mac by Comcast!!!

Re: Outgoing mail sstuck in OUT box in Mail app.

Check ALL of your email accounts for excessive spam. You will need to log-on via your browser. Mac Mail's "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message" doesn't always work.

Log onto EACH and EVERY account (it doesn't matter if forwarding is on) check your messages, delete and all unwanted messages. Then go back and use Mac Mail. I have been repeating this once a month and have not had any problems either sending or receiving.

I startd getting Comcast about two weeks ago. Suddenly yesterday I can't send email and I get this message "need user@domain at ". I have the right smtp setting and I deleted the Paypal message. Any suggestions?
