jpg distortion on aol email attachments

When I get email with jpg attachments from a friend using a pc and AOL as his ips, the jpgs are distorted.  I can view them only after copying them to the desktop.  Is there any thing either of us can do to alleviate this, distortion. I am using an IMac with OS 10.6.8.  I am using comcast as my ISP, and Mail for email.

Re: jpg distortion on aol email attachments

How is your friend putting them in the email? Does he drag and drop them? Or does he use something like Mac Mail's Attach button where we can be sure to send Windows-friendly attachments? It sounds like the image's wrapping in the email message is not correct. Maybe the height and width values are switched? But if they are right when you copy them to your file system, the image is okay.

Is this happening to all of the images your friend sends or only those that come out of a particular application on his machine?

Also, can you try to look at the messages and images in Xfinity Connect to see if they are right there? Click on the image file to open it in Xfinity Connect although just hovering over it showed it in my web browser.

Re: jpg distortion on aol email attachments

Beth,

I'm not sure how he gets them in the email, either by dragging or by using an attach command.

I checked the jpgs in the xfinity connect, and they were displayed correctly.  So perhaps it is something on my end?  I've never had trouble with any one else's jpg however.

I'll try and check with him tomorrow and see how he is attaching them.

Thanks

Re: jpg distortion on aol email attachments

There's nothing wrong on your end. aol's software causes strange behavior on incoming and outgoing attachments. I cringe when I have to deal with anyone still using an AOL address as its nothing but headaches. AOL used to compress everything. Have your sender try putting the images in a folder, zip it, then send the zip file and see how that works. That should get around AOLs software interference with the file display.

When sending, you probably need to do something similar. Whenever I send to my one AOL recip, my images are squashed. My hatred for AOL knows no bounds.

Joel,

Thanks for your help.  I'll pass the information to him, not sure he'll like it!
