Re: Cannot edit my web page

ok, here's how it goes.

trying to update pages in my website, which I have done before.

Can't really change anything; can upload new files, but cannot edit pages such as index.

Scour the comcast website for help.  none, except to click on "pages:" tab, but where to find that page with the pp tab is a secret.

Call comcast.  After usual decistion tree and wait, I just get the problem explained and get a dropped call/.

Call comcast again.  After some time again, am told I must get answers for this by online chat.

ok, here's the record of the online chat; you'll love it. Don't miss the excitiing conclusion.

Re: Cannot edit my web page

If you clicked on Start Now on the splash page, what happened?

Can you get to https://publish.comcast.net/home/index/

Re: Cannot edit my web page

yes, I have found that, somehow on my own.  It is not clear anywhere how to find this page.

I have followed through that material and it is pretty good, but my problem now is simple editing of the default page

I can even get links replaced to "resume" and "CV", as files that I have uploaded.l

BUt, when others go to my website and click the links it asks them to sign in to xfinity.  My linked files are status "public", so that is not the problem

By the way, actually getting a link into the default page is really difficult.  Why can't I just browse for a link, or get a list of the files I have uploaded?

thanks for the attempt to help

The Comcast personal web pages are not supported. As far as I know, there are no easy links to getting started.

I'm guessing that when you created a link to one of your documents, you used the long unwieldy link that is internal to your being signed in. Instead, you should use a short public URL.

For example, I have a small PDF file called OverOnePaper.pdf that is in a directory called stitch (note that case matters here).

The URL is simply: http://home.comcast.net/~bethkatz/stitch/OverOnePaper.pdf

Comcast does not have directory listing enabled. Many sites do not.

Edit: To edit a link,

- type some text

- select the text

- choose the link icon that looks like a link in a chain

- enter the simple URL for the file into the appropriate field

- save the change and save the page

Re: Cannot edit my web page

When I click on https://publish.comcast.net/home/index/ the page goes to a, "click here to log in and in the background it shows comcast.net personal web page, but when I go to log in it just loads the Comcast Customer Central page and it never allows me to go to the PWP so I may edit my website.  I've already suspened the email account that's associated with the web site and have turned the personal web pages off, but my website still shows up. I either need to edit it or have it removed completely and I can't do either.  How can I do one or the other?  Does anyone know. Comcast's chat is a joke and they are of no help!  It's quite absurd, but then so is Comcast!

Re: Cannot edit my web page

Are the pages really still showing up or just cached in your web browser?

From another thread here, it sounds like turning off the web pages is not preventing them from being provided by the web server.

You may need to turn the pages on, go to the link above to edit the pages, and delete them one-by-one. If you created your pages without something other than the Comcast tool, you should be able to use a third-party FTP program to access the files on the server (upload.comcast.net) and delete them. Then turn the pages off again.

I'm a customer like you. I hesitate to practice with turning off my own pages and don't have time right now to create some pages in a new secondary account to see whether they hang out longer than they should. I'll ask Comcast to investigate, but the personal web pages are not supported, and the company may not have anyone who can fix this bug.

Re: Cannot edit my web page

I've gone in and deleted the cache numerous times and I've gone on three other computers and I was able to access the website even after refreshing and emptying the cache.

You're correct.  Turning off the web pages still allows the pages to be shown.

I cannot go to the link above.  When I go to https://publish.comcast.net/home/index/ it automatically sends me to log in to comcast, (I can see the edit page behind the log in page, but I'm not allowed to access it.  Then when I type in the above link it loops me to the log in screen.

I created the pages with comcast's tool.

Please ask Comcast to invesitigate.  It's extremely pretencious of comcast to produce a product for its customers, only to not support it, or at least give the customers the ability to to do something about their products so something can be done about it before they make it unavailable to its customers. They have a really crappy business ethic and most people I know won't use them for any service. I only use their service because there is only one other inernet provider that can give me internet (in my area), but their service is extremely slow.  If I had another choice I would definitely use it.  Once I move away from this area, and into a metropolitan area I will definitely choose a diffrent IP.

Thanks so much.

Re: Cannot edit my web page

BTW:  When I click on upload.comcast.net, it directs me to the endless loop page of build more, store more,,.etc..then states, "start now".  After clicking start now, it directs me to the log in page and in the background it shows the edit page, but doesn't allow me to access it.  It's an endless loop.

Re: Cannot edit my web page

upload.comcast.net is the FTP address. It will not respond to http requests.

If you are using Windows and use Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer, but the file browser thing; I don't do Windows), try ftp://upload.comcast.net in the location bar. You may be able to delete files through that.

You can do that in various web browsers (such as Chrome) and enter your username and password, but they usually won't let you make changes.

You may have to call Comcast to get this remedied.  Since you have already suspended the email account and turned PWP off, you have nothing to log in to in order to edit/remove the pages.  Had you removed the files first, then turned off PWP and suspended your email account you probably wouldn't be in the loop.
Calling Comcast would seem to be the best way to go.

I can just as easily un suspend the account and turn the PWP back on.  I did that a few days ago. It didn't make a difference.

Re: Cannot edit my web page

If you don't want to see your web pages, then unsuspend your email address, re-enable your PWP, and go to https://publish.comcast.net and delete your files.  Or once you've done the above, use an FTP client to log-in at upload.comcast.net at you can delete multiple files at once.

Re: Cannot edit my web page

As I've stated that before, I'm unable to do that.  Comcast has me going in a continuous loop.  Comcast does not allow me to get to the https://publish.comcast.net site.

When I click on that site and click, "Start Now", Comcast brings me to a text box which states I need to log in (I'm already logged in BTW).  Behind the text box (which is grayed out) is the actual Comcast.net Personal Web Pages, but Comcast will not allow me to click anywhere besides the text box and it will only allow me to click in the, "Click here to log into your Comcast...blah blah blah, or I can click, "Take a video tour".  When I click to log in, Comcast takes me to the Sign in page.  From there I sign in, (again) and I'm taken to the Comcast Customer Service Page.  If I paste the https://publish.comcast.net site over the page I've just logged into it brings me back to the page which states "Start Now, and if I click that box, it starts all over again.  If I could get to my files and delte them via Comcast's propietary software or via ftp I definitely would!

Re: Cannot edit my web page

So, you're saying that once you unsuspend your account and re-enable PWP, you still go into the loop?  Is this also after clearing your cache and restarting your browser?  You might have to watch that splash screen again.  Ugh, I know.

Re: Cannot edit my web page

[ Edited ]

If you did not use the comcast online tools to author your pages you can delete them with an ftp client and you will not need to use the publish.comcast.net tools.. An FTP client is built into windows.  Open any windows explorer window (not internet explorer).  Libraries or documents folders will work.  Erase the address bar and type in ftp://upload.comcast.net  Hit enter and follow the prompts.  A window will open showing the files on the comcast server in your account.  Delete just like deleting any windows file.  With an FTP client you can batch delete all of them instead of one at a time.

If the web pages are enabled and you can't get in try resetting your password by changing it.  This will send a new password out to the system for the server. (This will also change the password for the email account).

If you used the comcast online tools to author the pages you will need to use the comcast file manager because the page info will be stored in a hidden /site/ directory that can't be accessed by ftp.

I am trying to make a web page, but there is not "create and edit web page" tab on my navigation bar.  What do I do?

Edit: Nevermind, I found it using the site map.

Re: Cannot edit my web page

You think you have problems? mine are worse. I did start a personal web page from comcast and now I cannot even log on it or find it. I was on the phone for hrs. and finally I was told she is not an expert on that and someone else will call me tomorrow. I know how you feel, but I am really disgusted with them expecially when I pay over $200.00 monthly. Jo

Re: Cannot edit my web page

There is a web page located at url:  http://home.comcast.net/~ross1954/ which matches the name you used for this forum.  If this is your page, go to url:  https://publish.comcast.net/ and sign-in with your email address without the @comcast.net.  Your email password will be the publishing password.

Computers are very picky about details. It may be that when you think you are typing carefully, that isn't being recorded well. Your message above is an example with many parts close enough for people to understand, but computers are really picky about details.

You could go to the publishing site https://publish.comcast.net/home/index/ and enter your email address and click Update Information. Maybe you are typing a lowercase letter l instead of the digit one. And you could click on Create & Edit Pages and proceed from there.

PWPfront.jpg

In any case, if you want to delete your page that you started in 2007, go to your account (from this forum, choose Customers tab above and Manage My Account), go to Users & Settings, and turn OFF personal web pages at the area boxed in purple in the picture below.

Unfortunately A LOT of people have turned off their personal web pages, but their website still continues to be broadcast.  Comcast doesn't care about their customers and has such a lack of technical experience in their customer service department that I have given up completely.  As soon as I can get rid of Comcast; the better. Calling Comcast and speaking with, more people than I care to talk to in a lifetime, no one knows how to turn off or edit customers' websites.  This is truly absurd!

Re: Cannot edit my web page

As I wrote that, I realized you would protest.

However, in this person's case, there is no contact info. What they started for a page is minimal. And we have no way of knowing whether your page's inability to disappear is unusual or not. If they turn off their pages, they might go away as they should.

I try to help here. I'm a customer like you. I have no extra access to accounts. I have been saying for years that personal web pages are an unsupported feature.
