Bogus Norton Upgrade download message?

I keep getting a mis-spelled Norton Upgrade Available message ("Computer Reboot Require" [sic]). You can almost read the Chinese. It's also formatted with overlapping text.

I haven't accepted it. How do I verify the authenticity of this message?

(And how do I post an image of the pop-up so you can see it?)

Thanks.

Re: Bogus Norton Upgrade download message?

All upgrades to Norton come via Live Update. If it's from anyother source, it's suspect and I would recommend avoiding it.

Check your version; the current verision for Comcast/Norton Security Suite is 5.1, I believe (I don't use it).

Some program updates from Norton will require reboot, but not all

I am not an expert and I would not comment on the security part of his/her question, but I have posted many pictures. I think that qualifies me to comment on how to post jpgs! When you go to make another post in your thread, you will see a very small picture of a tree.  Click on the picture and you will get a window allowing you to upload (I think that's the correct term) a jpg from your computer or your picture gallery at Comcast. I am not certain if you need to have a certain number of posts in order to do this. Please see my jpg which I am posting and notice the tree which I have placed a square around, This square is not a part of the window you will see when you post.

Here is what shows up after you have clicked on the tree:

npersn31,

Great instructions, but I think you will find the OP does not have the Edit/Insert Image button. It is apparently tied to the number of posts.

For those posters without the edit/image insert button, the best recourse is to use an online facility such as Image Shack, and  post the link to the screenshot in this thread.

Re: Bogus Norton Upgrade download message?

There is actually a valid upgrade campaign going on now to automatically upgrade NSS v3 and NSS v4 to v5.  This comes down silently through live update, but gives a toaster pop-up in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen asking permission to continue.

It is possible that after seeing the valid messages, some malicious code was created by people trying to get clicks on a fake alert that looks real.

What version of NSS are you running?  If you go to xfinity.com/norton and start the download/install process to manually upgrade to v5 yourself, then you can rest assured that any pop-up after that would not be valid.

Of course in the future there could be a similar campaign to help customers upgrade to the next version as well.  When you see a message like that and arent sure, check to see what the latest version is on the comcast security portal and manually upgrade yourself.  Then you dont have to worry about whether or not the popup is valid.
