FWIW, I don't even have it installed on my machine. I noticed a while ago that there is not much content on the web that needs it anymore.

Thanks EG.So It doesn't effect how regular Flash Player plays! So it's not needed for anything in XP or in anything? Comcast sent me a link with Shockwave included when I asked them about playing videos on Comcast.net and webpages,I've heard it can be a problem but that it's needed?? Thanks, Debbie

Basic rule for add-ons like Flash, Shockwave, Adobe Reader, etc... If you have it installed, keep it current.

Not to my knowledge. I have has both on several computers without issue. Of course, if you don't use it that often, you can always uninstall it.

Debbielou,
Shockwave and flash will peacefully coexist on an XP system. Uninstalling Shockwave should be as simple as using Add/Remove programs. But there's also an uninstaller app.
By the way, don't necessarily count on the the usage indicators in the Windows program list. For things like Browser Helper Objects and extensions like Shockwave, they can be wildly inaccurate. If you do uninstall but then visit a site that wants it, you'll get a browser prompt. One example of apps that may use it are online games, playable through your browser. (I know that IWON is a site that still makes use of Shockwave for some games.)
Shockwave can be a malware vector, so that is a consideration, as well.

I have had both Flash and Shockwave installed on XP, Vista, and Windows 7 with no problems on either.
I have not heard of any problems uninstalling Flash or Shockwave using Add/Remove Programs.
