Since allowing a Norton update (around 10-13-2011), my monitor won't hibernate, my screen saver (mystify) is slow and erratic, Firefox is slow to load and idle time scans won't stop. I’ve used all the program settings in an attempt to get things back to normal to include changing idle time options. I believe the idle time scans running in the background when the system is idle is causing all these symptoms, but I can’t get the idle time stuff to stop. I uninstalled Norton Security Suite and all seems back to normal.
Is anyone else having these issues? Has anyone found a solution? I’m running windows xp, sp2.

Can you be more specific about the "norton update". Was it an update, an upgrade in version, was it from a popup (how were you notified) and how did you obtain the update. Once we figure out what you may have downloaded andinstalled we can go from there. It might be something as simple as a remove, run the Norton Removal Tool and reinstall. Do you want to try to get NSS back on your system?
I also believe XP SP2 support was ended in July of 2010, so that is something else that appears to need update, but please, wait until such time as we get your Norton straightened out - if you want Norton back on your system.

Thanks for your reply.
The update was from a Norton task bar pop up. I don't know anything more. The dang window kept popping up over the course of many days, so I finally gave in and clicked it.
Yes, I would like to get Norton back on my system, but I'm hesitant with all the background stuff it runs without having the ability to turn any of it off, regardless of what the settings menus tell you.

OK - if you are willing to try to get Norton back here's the scoop:
Follow these instructions:

After way too many hours of researching some other issues that suddenly developed, I’m finally back to handling the Norton re-install. But first, I digress. For some unknown reason, my internet phone (magicjack) stopped working. One and a half hours of live help produced nothing but frustration. But it did get me going in the right direction. While running the device manager, I discovered a CD/DVD issue. I never had any problems with that before. At least not before I let Norton clean up my registry earlier today. Long story short, I discovered the registry error which disabled the cd/dvd which disabled the magicjack. Go figure.
In the process, I had to download and install service pack 3 to get access to a totally useless Microsoft Fix It utility. Hence, I am now running XP SP3.
I’ve run the removal tool and rebooted as you suggested. I’m currently downloading the 170+mb Norton program for reinstall. I don’t know how far I’ll get this evening, but I’ll keep you posted when I get it installed.
BTW, I'm not running any other security programs that I know of, unless they're secretly running in the background. ![]()

Thanks for the update fabrik8r, it sounds like you are making some advances and hopefully the end is in sight.
Please keep us posted.
BTW, I avoid running Registry Cleaners - especially those whch do not ask prior to removing questionable entries.

OK, I’ve downloaded and installed the new Norton Security Suite. I don’t remember if it was before or after install that I got a prompt which said “An expired Norton product has been detected and is being removed”. Then I had to reboot. Previously, I had run the removal tool as directed. I’m not sure what’s up with that. Upon successful reboot, I received the “Agree and Install” window, for the second time. I did and rebooted as requested, again. I ran all the live updates, rebooting as requested after each, somewhere around 6 times. The first two downloads were the largest and I believe were probably duplicates, being as they were the exact same size- 27.94mb. I reviewed but did not adjust any of the settings except for adjusting the “PC Tune UP” schedule for once a week. I adjusted my screen saver to 1 minute and power save to 2 minutes. Everything worked normally. I then readjusted my screen saver to 10 minutes and power save to 2 hours, which is where I normally run them. The first run through appears to be working correctly. I will know more if the system makes it through the night in the proper fashion.
Also, Firefox appears to be loading in its normal fashion, about 2-4 seconds.
I’m not getting the “Idle Time Scan” pop up that I was getting after every 2 minutes of idle time. That appears to be functioning properly now as well.
So far, so good. Thanks for all your help. If the system makes it through the night normally, I'll feel confident the issue has been resolved. I’ll leave a short post tomorrow, if so. If not, it’ll be a long one.
Again, thanks.![]()
