Norton Security Upgrade?

[ Edited ]

On My Laptop, norton recently downloaded and a window popped up and asked to install upgrade to the newer version of norton.  I seen the email from comcast, telling me this was coming. So I clicked install, and it installed it, But!

1. When is this upgrade coming to my norton thats on my desktop?

2. I might have accidently a month or so ago, had the screen pop up, and clicked don`t install. Will it redownload through norton again?

3. Is there a place to go to just upgrade norton, and have it update/upgrade norton to the newest version?

Note, did not have constant guard on my laptop, and still do not. The upgrade I got on my laptop was soley to upgrade to the current version of norton.

Also have read this http://customer.comcast.com/Pages/FAQViewer.aspx?seoid=Upgrade-my Norton-Security-Suite

4. Should I be patient, and expect norton to download the newer version again?

Thank you.

You can check the version on your desktop by going to Support on the main page and then click on ABOUT on the drop down menu.  The latest version is 5.1.0.29.  Please post back with your version number so we canprovide info on upgrading to you.

2. I might have accidently a month or so ago, had the screen pop up, and clicked don`t install. Will it redownload through norton again?

As explained above, once we know the version number you have installed we will provide direction as to what you need to do to get it upgrading.

3. Is there a place to go to just upgrade norton, and have it update/upgrade norton to the newest version?

Yes and we will provde the links once we know how far out of date you versions are.

Note, did not have constant guard on my laptop, and still do not. The upgrade I got on my laptop was soley to upgrade to the current version of norton.

That is good as there have been problems with Constant Guard Protection Suite - IMHO you are better off for the time being with only Norton.

4. Should I be patient, and expect norton to download the newer version again?

Please post back with your current version and we'll go from there.

Thank you.

Gambit66 - I am not trying to be secretive or anything, but we have seen versions as old as version 3 or 4 and dependent on the current version installed there are addtional actions that may need to be taken to get you current.

Also please post back with the browser and version number you are using.  Internet Explorer 8 or 9?  Firefox 5 or 6?   Perhaps some other browser?  This can alos impact the functioning of Norton.

<edit>  I see you have edited your orginal post to include the link which talks about the upgrade.  That should be the notification you received before.  <edit>

Re: Norton Security Upgrade?

Thank you for your reply USAF.

I can tell/know the current version of norton on my desktop, because it`s not as the newer version on my laptop, and icon`s different, more features on the newer version. But this is the version on my desktop- Version: 3.8.0.41

And to add, I`m only interested in upgrading norton via the pop up window from my current version.  I don`t really want to uninstall, download and then reinstall.

Version 3.8.0.41 is ancient - the current version is 5.1.0.29.  The popup may or may not update over the top of that old a version - and that is assuming you will get the  popup again.  You can wait and try it to update overtop if you get the popup again.

And to add, I`m only interested in upgrading norton via the pop up window from my current version.  I don`t really want to uninstall, download and then reinstall.

I understand your reluctance to want to download  the new version, uninstall the old, run the Norton Removal Tool, and reinstall the new version....but if no popup occurs again and or the update fails via the popup attempt (because of how old your current version is) your only option to keep Norton will be the uninstall/reinstall route.

The option of course is yours, but be advised there have been improvements in the program since version 3.

You may also want to check your current version on your laptop (I'm guessing it is 5.0.125), if it is not 5.1.0.29, then you need to open NSS and manually Run LiveUpdate (located on drop-down under PC Security on left side of main page of NSS) as many times as necessary for it to respond "no more updates available". If a reboot is requested, reboot and then continue to Run LiveUpdate until it responds "no more updates available" and then reboot one last time.  Double check to make sure it is version 5.1.0.29.

Also, if you desire to upgrade to IE 9, I would do the IE 9 upgrade prior to updating your laptop's Norton.

Re: Norton Security Upgrade?

Thanks for the reply USAF.

Hopefully it will pop up again and I can install from there.  I wonder why there are not more subject matter on this upgrade from my link above.  Like what happens if you accidently do click do not install from the pop up. And how to go about having norton redownload the newer version.

I can`t believe my norton product is that out of date, "ancient" as you say. I upgraded to norton the very first chance I got when comcast got rid of mcafee.  Or is it just that, the date you switched from mcafee to norton dictates what version you get.?  Still, I run live update everyday, and had it upgrade before, you would think my version would be the newest or newer.

Anyway, Thank you for your prompt response, I hope to have the norton popup by the end of September, or I guess the dreaded slow process I will have to begin.

P.S.S.  My laptop "Vista sp2" had sat dorment since NOV 2010, and had just recently booted it back up, and spent a couple of hours updating, now it has IE9 and if I remember correctly, the norton popup happened not long after the upgrade to IE9 a couple of weeks ago.

Re: Norton Security Upgrade?

USAF-

So you suggest to use the norton removal tool in this thread, yet in your sticky notes, you only suggest it if there was a problem installing norton.

I`m not having a problem installing norton, I just want to upgrade. you suggest to save settings( norton) in normal upgrade, what happens If I do not save settings and use the norton removal tool just to upgrade, and have a fresh install of norton?

As I would rather skip the parameters of saving anything from such an old version, or ancient version as you say, on my system.

Thanks for any response in advance.

What you say is correct.  The sticky notes are written to cover the circumstances that occur most often.  The sticky pertaining to an upgrade (as in one version number - 3 to 4 or 4 to 5) does not mention the Norton Removal Tool (NRT). However, since you will be upgrading for 2 versions, I am not sure everything will be removed in order to clean up your system enough for a fresh install without any of the old things causing a conflict. That's why I would recommend running the NRT.  That said if you want to try it without running the NRT - then you may have to do it over again and use the NRT to clean it up if the new install fails.

I`m not having a problem installing norton, I just want to upgrade. you suggest to save settings( norton) in normal upgrade, what happens If I do not save settings and use the norton removal tool just to upgrade, and have a fresh install of norton?

Anytime you use the NRT it removes all Norton Settings, so if you do not save(export) your Identity Safe log-ins/cards prior to running the NRT, your user names and passwords will be lost.

As I would rather skip the parameters of saving anything from such an old version, or ancient version as you say, on my system.

Of course if you do not use use Identity Safe for your user names and passwords or the cards function to save info to fill in forms, then there is probably nothing to save from the old version.  It is a call you have to make on your own.

Thanks for any response in advance.

If I said anything here you still have concerns over or do not understand please come back and ask and I'll do my best to clarify it for you.  The bottom line for me is to get your through this upgrade in a matter you are happy and comfortable doing.

To USAF- Removed Norton Via control panel- add/remove programs-rebooted-downloaded norton removal tool-executed it-rebooted- downloaded norton from/ http://xfinity.comcast.net/constantguard/Products/CGPS/norton/ - installed-updated & rebooted 3 times-4th time, you have the newest updates- All is well!

Q1. Upon looking at "Items to Exclude from scans" I found \System Volume Information\ listed. Is this a normal exclusion in Norton? Or should I delete it from exclusions so it can be scanned also?

Q2. I deleted the Norton Download manager, and the short cut to norton on my desk top. Norton also left " Norton Installation Files" folder on my desk top, can this be deleted as well?

Re: Norton Security Upgrade?

Gambit66,

Q1: Yes, that is a normal exclusion, you can leave it there.

Q2: Yes, you can remove the installation files - they were left there in case you need to reinstall and do not want to re-download them.  If you do remove them and need to reinstall, you can simply return to the xfinity.com/norton page and re-download them.

OK - you got my confirmation as requested - but trust me JonMcB is a Norton employee and has been very helpful enlightening me ( sometimes behind the scenes) and thus permitting me to provide answers that would have been beyond my knowledge had he not assisted me with the information.  Trust me, when it comes to answers for Norton I consider Jon to be the man.  He is also a Comcast customer and is also active here on his own time!

Re: Norton Security Upgrade?

FWIW, IMHO, you are making the decision just the opposite of what I would recommend.

"Everything else " as you put it has caused quite a bit of problems for many users - have a look around the forum in regards to Constant Guard problems.

Norton has come a long way since the 2008 and earlier versions.  It is no longer a resource hog and has been rated consistently toward the top of the AV ratings.

That all said, in answer to your question, yes, you can install "everything else" and not install Norton.

hahaha!!  Thank you for your quick response.  Honestly after the nightmare I had from Norton in the past , it will be a while before I will have the courage to try it again.  I used to swear by it.

thanks

That Constant Guard I wouldn't touch with a 10-ft. Kaypro.

Norton was junk years ago but the current version (and the next version) are superb. I run it on all my systems, from a 1.2GHz tablet to 4.2GHz performance gaming machine.  Additionally, my clients also have no issues with it.

Re: Norton Security Upgrade?

I'll echo Rolo42's comments. Avoid Constant Guard, but install Norton.

Constant Guard has some good ideas, but the implementation is poor and sadly, there are just too many unexplained errors. Not a lot, but ones that no security product should exhibit.

Norton, however, has made a great turn-around. This Desktop was new in August 2010 and came with a 15 month subcription for NIS 2010. I decided to try for the free period. I now have it on all my computers and recently renewed my subscription. It has not caused me any problems.

Hi Gambit66,

It has taken quite awhile but we now have three Norton Experts who can post on the Comcast Forums and JonMcB_Norton is one of the them.  So he now has something in his user name to show he is a Norton employee.
