Norton Version 6

Good Morning!

I just noticed while browsing around my account, that a Norton security suit 6 is out. Does anybody know when Version 5 will be upgraded to 6?

Gambit66, I am not an expert, but I am aware that there is a procedure to follow if you want to upgrade to version 6. It does not just happen. Please see the following thread or the FAQs. Post your questions after reading and the experts will help you.

Hi Gambit66,

The above link will take you to the Norton Security Suite v6 download. At this time, NSS v5 will not automatically be updated to v6, you will need to visit the above site to perform the update. Thanks.

Will do as soon as I have the time too. Is there any thing new in version 6?

One thing new is that the Identity Cards and Log-ins now work with Google's Chrome browser as well as IE. That is a big plus for me.

You can also save your log-ins and identity cards online but I am not using that feature.

Re: Norton Version 6

Does the install require me to uninstall version 5 first? or can one just download and install version 6 to upgrade?

Hi Gambitt66,

No you do not need to uninstall version 5 (as long s you are not expeeriencing any problems with version 5).  Version 6 from the download link will over instal and should save all your ID Safe data as well.

As a precautionary measure we are asking that folks backup their ID Safe Data prior to stating the over install - just in case Murphy's Law comes in to play.  :smileywink:

BTW, Backup/Export instructions ar located here:

Thanks USAF

Install/upgrade from version 5 to 6 went smooth. Besides the install restart, had 3 more restarts from updates after install. Then a restart from an update yesterday. That was on my PC with WIndows XP, when I do our laptop with Windows Vista, I`ll post how that went as well.

Re: Norton Version 6

Smooth upgrade on the laptop windows vista as well, same amount of restarts though.

Conflict; still having the issue of back ground idle scan starts to run after I start a manual full scan. After about 15 minutes a window pops up and states norton is running a background idle scan. I can stop my manual scan, but the idle one keeps on going. Why their isnot away to completely disable idletime scans is beyound me. It is the most useless feature norton, or anyother brand as well.

If I want to leave my computer on without me present, norton protects it just the same. idle scan is a nuisance, especially when I have to restart the computer just to shut it off. Don`t get me wrong, love norton, but it could be better.

Re: Norton Version 6

Hi Gambit66,

You can try this and see if it gets you closer to what you want.

From main Page of NSS, go to Settings > Tasks Scheduling > Automatic Tasks tab > Uncheck any of those tasks you do not wan to run in the background (remember to select Apply), or you should be able to go to the Scheduling Tab (same location) and select Manual Schedule ( and Apply and save) - this way none of the previous tasks will run until you run them manually.

Addtionally, if you do not want the Full SYstem scan to run until you run it manually,  you can go to Settings > Antivirus > Scans and Risks Tab > Full System Scan Configure [+]  and on the Scan Schedule Tab, and select Do not schedule this scan.  If you stil desires to run the Full System Scan on a schedule, select one of the other options including the options on the bottom of the page.  Click OK.

Hope that answers your questions.

Re: Norton Version 6

Thanks for the response USAF.

Had done everything but the 'configure full system scan' I hope now that it does not happen anymore.

It would not bother me if/when Norton knew when the mouse or keyboard was being used again, that the computer is not in idle anymore, and stop the scan. But that was not the case.

Thanks again for the information
