Sadly, can't resolve the ccsvchst cpu problem---Punting...

Perhaps this in an odd way helps someone in the middle of this as well, but I've had this on and off ccsvchst.exe process going to 90-99% CPU, and even with idle scanning turned off (one of the sugestions over <----- there in the norton forums) it still comes back.  I do have a Roxio program installed, but verrrry recently....and this was driving me nuts months before I put in Angry Birds Space to calm my nerves.

I don't have the time for this, so I'm punting for now and going with a combination of Avast + WFW.  Avast by the way, seems to be making their UI less and less aggravating to me, WFIW.

I'll check back in from time to time to see if this issue seems to no longer affect many or if any of the "slam dunk" style solutions actually work for someone.

I am sorry tgm1024, but I have no idea what you are talking about without more details - but if punting is your thing - OK.

If you decide to pursue farther, please provide more in depth details about exactly what you are talking about.  If I missed what you are referring to, please enlighten us here on the Seucrity Board.

Re: Sadly, can't resolve the ccsvchst cpu problem---Punting...

Thanks for your fast reply.  But this is a common problem:

http://www.google.com/search?q=ccsvchst.exe+cpu+usage+xp

Or a most specific complaint as example:

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Possible-Solution-CCSVCHST-EXE-Proble...

Pretty much I'm getting the same out of control spike.  Usually NIS, 360, or NSS (as far as I can tell).  Because I haven't seen that with a flat out NAV, I'm suspecting it's a firewall related thing, though disabling that on my system did nothing.  In fact nothing but uninstalling it helped.

I'll hold back for a while.  For yucks though:

Windows XP SP3

NSS latest rev. (from comcast *without* CCG installed)

ccsvchst taking over the cpu, even after firewall + antivirus "turned off", after reboot, after idle scan disabled, after after after after.... :smileyhappy:  Thanks anyway

---> I VERY MUCH APPRECIATE your prompt and cordial reply. <---

Hi again  tgm1024,

I read through the links you referenced and also the addtional info you provided.  I remain confused in that you mention NIS, N360 (NSS) and NAV in the same sentence.  You relieze you should have only one of the Norton products (or any other Antivirus/security program) installed and running at the same time.

Hopefully you only have one of these installed and active.

Just for grins, what happens if you remove everything (if other Norton products or someone else's are installed) excpet NSS and then go thru the settings and return everything to "Default".   Any difference?

Also please ensure you have no other security programs running in real time such as MBAM Pro or SAS Pro.

Re: Sadly, can't resolve the ccsvchst cpu problem---Punting...

No, I'm talking about the products that seem to exhibit this process running out of control.  I didn't want to characterise this as a NSS thing only, because it doesn't seem to be.

I (was) running NSS only.  (I'm now Free Avast + WFW----now on an UNchoked system).  There was no other anti-malware or firewalll running at the time I had NSS going.  I've been a Norton fan since 2009 (when it stopped eating the cpu bandwidth like candy).  Prior to that I was NOD32 for a number of years.  Prior to that, Norton.  Always being careful to keep only one product running at a time.

I've been down the fault-isolation route....none of the suggestions seem to work.  The closest I got to working was using the norton removal tool,  re-installing NSS, (using defaults) and it happened again within hours.  In any case, thanks for your time.

I posted this for others facing this--->knowing that people tried and gave up is actually useful data.

Thanks anyway :smileyhappy:
