Security too high with IE 8/9 prevents downloads

Hello-I am running Win 7 Home Premium-64 bit,IE8 and Norton Internet Security 12. I originally had IE9 installed but removed IE9 recently hoping that would eliminate my Security problem. Both IE8/9 shows this problem. When I attempt to download a file,I always get the error message "Your security is set too high to allow this file to be installed. I disabled NIS12,reset all security zones to Medium but I still received the error message while attempting to download/install Microsoft Silverlight and Adobe's Flashplayer. I have Google's Chrome installed which has downloaded/installed these files but they are un available to IE8/9. Someone stated that 32 bit IE9 should be downloaded/installed with win7 64 bits because the 64 bit IE9 has problems. Will this work or introduce more problems. A Frys tech installed the 64 bit Win 7 version when I requested the 32 bit version will appreciate any help that I can get toward solving this problem. Thanks.

Try this first.

Internet Options/Security tab.

Select Internet by clicking the globe icon.

Click Custom level.

Scroll down to Downloads. Under File Download tick Enable if it is not ticked.

Click OK.

Hi wardell1,

In regards to IE 9 - the only version that is supported by Nortonand most other companies) is the 32 bit version and is in fact the default version for Windows 7.  In regards to installed 64 bit version of windows 7 in lieu of the 32 bit version - I see nothing wrong with that.  The 32 bit version of IE 9 will function fine with Win 7 64 bit.

Hope that answers your question.

Re: Security too high with IE 8/9 prevents downloads

Hello-Thanks for responding to my question. I see all your statements as true statements but I could not get my computer out of the reject all download attempts via IE8. After attempting to correct this annoying problem for almost 3 weeks,I finally took my computer to Fry's computer repair. The Tech ran all the types of corrections for this problem with Norton completely shutdown and  IE8's 3 zones set to Medium. The error message still appeared. I attempted to reinstall IE9 but I received the error message. The tech attempted to return to IE9 but received the same results that I did. The final solution was a clean install which terminated the problem. The Tech is convinced that it is a software problem that is not associated with  Security. Thanks again.

Re: Security too high with IE 8/9 prevents downloads

Have you tried Trend Micro's free "Housecall" scan for malware and viruses?

Only reason I'm writing that is that I purchased an online game from a supposedly reputable vendor.  Had problems shortly after with MS updates and navigating to sites. Dabbled with IE8 settings to no avail. Found homepage changed so ran Housecall.

The bloody game had a VIRUS in the setup file; AND a nasty dll file that kept replicating !!!  Neither Norton, MS Security Essentials nor Avira picked it up.  (No, wasn't running 3 AV programs at once, lol).

Just a thought.

Re: Security too high with IEEE 8/9 prevents downloads

Hello MissyLaneous-Thanks for the information. It was not a virus because viruses do not display error messages. I received an error message each time stating that this file cannot be opened because security is set too high. I took my computer to Fry's Electronics computer repair. The tech ran through all the possible solutions that I had tried suggested to me by Forum  moderators and others with no solutions. The final solution was to perform a clean install. The tech suspected a software problem but could not isolate it. The problem was corrected

Hello Everyone-Thanks for the information. I took the computer to Fry's Electronics' computer repair. The tech stated that the problem was software but he could not isolate the problem to a specific program. The final solution was to perform a clean install. Consider  this post closed. Thanks again.
