What is ComcastAntiSpy.exe?

My computer was running heavy so I checked to see what was going on in Task Manager.  A program called ComcastAntiSpy.exe was using 50% of my CPU.  I quick check online says this is not from Comcast and is a major problem.  I want to know what you say.

Re: What is ComcastAntiSpy.exe?

Do you have the Comcast toolbar installed if so that is part of the toolbar. You can uninstall the toolbar.

@ Juliech,

Please start a new thread for your problem and give us more details - what kind of alert are you receiving?  A popup from Norton?  Please include as many details as possible - when does it occur?? All the time, at boot, only during certain prgrams, etc.

This is the error message:

Access violation at address 00423B70 in module 'ComcastAntiSpy.exe'. Write of Address 0000000D.

I only get the error message at shutdown.

I do not have the comcast toolbar installed.

I do not know the program sending the error message.  Does not look like Norton.

In the Norton startup programs there is listed a ComcastAntiSpyClient.  I have disabled same.

I have searched the drives for (.exe) files and it is not listed.

Still get the error message.

Re: What is ComcastAntiSpy.exe?

If you, at any time, installed the Comcast toolbar, CA Pest Patrol Real Time Protection came with it.

If you had the toolbar and uninstalled it, Real Time Protection remains.

You can uninstall the CA Real Time component via add/remove programs (Programs and Features).

There should be a special place in heaven for you.

I spent at least 4 hours trying to solve this, even talking to a Comcast support lady who said i must have a

virus and do a scan with Norton.  I had already scanned and rebooted many, many times.

Unable to find the folder comcastb. Found a folder called comcasttb/antispyware  and there is a comcastantispy.exe file there, but no comcastspy folder.  I also did a search and found the ca pest patrol realtime protection.msi installer file in the C:\windows\download installtion\B79a...etc folder.

When you looked in those files you found did you see in any of them an uninstall file. That's the one you have to run to uninstall the program.

Re: What is ComcastAntiSpy.exe?

I also show CA PEST PATROL REALTIME in my add/remove programs.

I have comcast (now xfinity) toolbar installed.

I will remove it if it is slowing down my computer and causing big lag times BUT...

please let me know why I would want to remove an anti-spyware program that is running scans and protecting my computer...  i'm confused on that.

Thank you for your advice, it's most appreciated.

Hi javajunkiegirl,

Do you have the Norton Security suite installed?  If so, it will do a much better and thorough job of protecting you than the toolbar you are referring to.  If you do not have Norton installed (it free to Comcast customers) please go to the following link and follow the instructions:

Re: What is ComcastAntiSpy.exe?

I guess I had created the perfect storm.  After installing Constant Guard, I could no longer open my Comcast emails without first getting an error message and even then could only read an email by hitting reply and reading the original message in the body of a reply.  I could not add attachments.  Worse yet, I could not log into my remote work station - not good since I work from home.  I was told by Comcast Support that my problem was that Comcast doesn't consistently work with Internet Explorer and I should use Firefox.  This is after I've successfully used Internet Explorer (IE) for 10-15 years.  I did download Firefox and successfully read emails, but was not satisfied that was the answer.  I tried downloading IE  9 again, just in case it had somehow become corrupted - no help.

After several calls to Comcast support, I decided the security system was blocking my work connection.  I contacted a Constant Guard specialist at Comcast, who talked me through the Constant Guard uninstall.  I mentioned the Comcastantispy.exe error message that I was getting when shutting down and she suggested deleting the Xfinity toolbar, which I did.  I was still getting problems, so called Comcast support again.  When I pressed for a more knowledgeable person, a supervisor suggested removing my history (had done several times, but what the heck) and suggested removing IE 9 and going back to IE 8.  Again, I told him I was not okay with living with the Comcastantispy.exe error message and I didn't think my computer was the problem. Finally, he also helped me locate the Ca Pest Patrol ( as mentioned by USAF_E-8_RET)  which I would not have recognized as part of either the Constant Guard or Xfinity toolbar.  Then I looked on line to get directions to removing IE 9 which left me with IE 8 by default.  This combination gave me the relief I needed.

But it goes from good to bad.  I contacted Comcast to find out how to just get Norton without the Constant Guard suite.  The tech said Norton only comes in the bundle, but I could install Constant Guard and just choose to activate the Norton.  Sooo, once again, I started downloading Constant Guard.  This time, I unchecked installing the Comcast Xfinity toolbar and expected to slide by.  Again I was asked to set up a password and I could see that I was not going to get to the Norton choice without getting more Constant Guard than I wanted.  I aborted the install, but still had to uninstall some Constant Guard.  Dang, the Comcastantispy.exe was back.  I called Comcast again and a new tech said I could install Norton only and gave me the Norton.com/Comcast address to do so.  Wish the other guy knew that, would have saved myself more agony.  I stepped through the easy Norton installation.

So this morning, I discovered this blog and using the tip in  #12 about checking the C: drive to find a folder "comcastb" under programs.  Like Havic321, I clicked on it, a new folder "comcast antispy" opened and showed an uninstall file.  I clicked on uninstall, got an error message, but the file uninstalled anyway.  Then I deleted the now empty folder and am back in business.

I sure appreciate the input from everyone and wish Comcast staff had this information so that we only needed to have one phone call to tech support  - would have saved us all lots of time and frustration.  Happy New Year!

Hi pgranger,

First of all, glad to hear you finally got everything straightened out and also glad to hear that the persitance of customers to get to the bottom of this and the ultimate fix has helped out other folks.  LoPhattPhuud and I have been battling (literally) trying to get info from the folks in charge of CGPS and have not succeeded.  However, as long as other customers continue to provide feedback, we may all just get ahead of this rampaging thing they call CGPS.

If you have time you can read thru some of the other CGPS related errors that have occurred.

Program that many have problems with and some say, if I have Norton why do I need it, specially if it appears to cause me grief. Most decide to uninstall it. You can click on the popup box that advises that your CPU Usage is high and that will lead you to uninstall option.

Good Luck.
