Windows XP NET 3.0 Runtime error in loading Norton Security Suite

Loading the programs stops indicating the apparent lack of the above update.  My updates appear current - help!  This happens when the download says it is updating the computer with latest version of NET 3.0 Framework, or something like that (I am at work).  Have run both Malwarebytes and another anti-spyware program, fixed the issues - and I'm getting an annoying pop up in lower right corner - it may be the bots we've gotten alerts on - haven't attended to that yet.  Please provide help with downloading Norton.

It was installed once, thought it was giving us performance issues, etc., used the unistall tool now I can't reload it!

I do believe this NET 3.0 Framework cincerns the COnstant Guard Protection suite installation and ask for you to await user CGPS_Support to provide the answer - he normally checks into the forums daily.

Re: Windows XP NET 3.0 Runtime error in loading Norton Security Suite

The first thing to do is to go to http://www.update.microsoft.com/ and accept any updates for your computer, making sure to check for .net updates. Restart - see if the issue continues. The big question is - Have you installed Constant Guard Protection Suite - and are getting this message when trying to update Norton, OR are you simply trying to accept a Norton update and are seeing this message? If it's the latter - then you may wish to contact Norton. However, it you continue to get a .net error message, or a failure in installing .net from that installer - your probable next course of action would be - after accepting any updates, and if the issue continues - to go directly to the MIcrosoft Download Center, and download/install Microsoft .net framework 3.0 directly from the MS site. This version of .net originally installed (for XP) with Service Pack 2. Most .net issues are seen with XP.

We (Constant Guard Protection Suite) DO provide a message stating that, for the operating system the minimum requirement includes Microsoft .net 3.0. If our installer does not detect the presence of that Operating System component, we then re-direct the installation to the Microsoft download site for .net 3.0 and at that point, the Microsoft installer goes to work. So, if the issue is appearing during the .net 3.0 installation, then there is an issue with the .net location on your computer - it could be corrupt on your computer, the MS installer may not be able to locate it, your OS could be corrupt, the download may be problematic,... The .net 3.0 download and install is lengthy - 20 minutes or longer depending on the computer and connection speed, and it is possible for it to time out, and any line drop during the installation can crash the update as well. There could many reasons why the operating system is not, or cannot update.

However, what is unclear is what you are installing when you get the message -

Are you getting this message when you are installing Constant Guard Protection Suite from the www.comcast.net/security location, OR are you simply trying to update Norton? The Norton updates bypass Constant Guard completely. If this is occurring while you are updating or installing Norton - then your support issue remains the same - probably a .net 3.0 corruption issue, or or service pack issue - but you would need to go to Norton for support or to Microsoft for assistance with the .net install or re-install.

Also - .net issues are most frequently seen with older operating systems, such as XP because .net was a separate component of the OS, and there has not been an update to XP in 4 years. IF that is the case, then go to Microsoft Updates and accept ANY update for your operating system. Also - there are some versions of Windows 7 which ship with .net 4.0 only - and do not have the prior versions of .net.

Does the "annoying" update message you are seeing have any bearing on the probelm? Is it a "branded" update, such as "Norton" or "Constant Guard," and what does it say? Is it prompting you to accept an update?

Re: Windows XP NET 3.0 Runtime error in loading Norton Security Suite

CGPS_SupportThe reason I suggested the problem may be CGPS is because Norton Security Suite does not use the .Net Framework at all.

From Norton Employee michael:

"Just to be clear, Norton does not use the .Net Framework. Other programs on your computer need it but Norton does not require it to run. Please let me know what tool you are referring too that is telling you to install .Net Framework 4.0."

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/ccSvcHst-Application-Error-Symantec-S...

There are certainNorton products that do/did use .net, such as Norton Ghost and possibly Norton Utilities ut none of the NIS/NAV/N360 (NSS) since the 2008 versions.

Once the OP comes back with more info and we figure out what they really need to get installed we can go from there.

Re: Windows XP NET 3.0 Runtime error in loading Norton Security Suite

Thanks much, USAF. My error -

I'd still like to know what the pop-up message is, though. As you know, we do prompt regarding .net 3.0 (not .net 4.0), but we're not the only application which prompts for .net. In this case, though, it probably IS us, and the question becomes, "What is stopping the update on the customer's computer?" It's not going to be us. So, something out of our control is blocking the .net 3.0 update/installation.

The next step is still to go to MS Updates, and accept Updates, and if the problem persists, to download/install .net 3.0 directly from the MS site rather than via our installer. I think the core issue is going to be that, 1) the customer has a corrupt version of .net 3 installed, and it can't be removed to be replaced; 2) the download could be timing out. If the customer's processor is being taxed and the drive is spooling the download, and the drive is old and/or corrupt, it could fail. I'm sure you're well aware of this.

So - you're right - but the resolution to try to resolve the .net issue remains the same. Unfortunately, if it is a .net corruption issue, removing and reinstalling .net is time consuming, and ours isn't the only application that's reliant on .net 3.0, so simply *not* installing Constant Guard may not be the ultimate answer here.

Thanks again for your input.
