Would you fall for a Phish...

Here is a little test.

I erred on one.. fortunately on the side of caution. I got no phishing wrong.. Just thought one that wasn't.... was.

Same here, but it's a good test.  It's nice to know I can idenitfy bad emails most of the time and err on the side of caution the rest of the time.

I've seen that, and liked that it explains what the indicators are, and that it uses some pretty typical examples.

(I scored 10 out of 10, but was highly suspicious of one of the legit ones, myself.)

Re: Would you fall for a Phish...

Let's take a poll, I was suspicious of the Bank of Choice email due to the odd wording and lack of decent  paragraphs, as well as the oddly formated phone number.

Re: Would you fall for a Phish...

Baric,

I thought the "From" address was suspect, in that it didn't clearly identify the "Bank of Choice" as the sender.  And there was no specific greeting.  At least the full account number wasn't provided (a security measure one would expect to see from a financial institution).

I gave it the benefit of the doubt because I figured that having made the request mentioned, I wouldn't be surprised by such a confirmation.  Plus there wasn't any obvious attempt to collect information.

(Points covered in the explanation/notes provided at the end of the quiz.)

Wow, I got 10 out of 10.  Surprised myself, I guess I'm more savvy than I thought.

Re: Would you fall for a Phish...

The one I got wrong was the bank one... I wasn't sure about the 'From" and thought the formating of the e-mail wasn't as organized as i thought a bank would do.

Re: Would you fall for a Phish...

Phishing is an example of a social engineering technique typically carried out by e-mail or instant messaging that is used to fool you into giving up your personal information so that crooks can steal from you.

The only defense against Phishing is recognizing it before you give away your account numbers, your social security number, and your passwords.

Besides using any of the anti-phishing functions, such as the Internet Explorer 7 or KAV Phishing Filter, you can test yourself and add to your knowledge using the SonicWall Phishing test.

The one that helped me the most was the one that seemed to be from Discover that used an evil-doer's 800 number as  the "here's my stuff" conduit. Phishing Filters, as you know, don't address this type of attack.
