No phone service, no dial tone. Why?

Are there any lights on the front of the Modem?
If so what lights are off, and which are blinking or steady on?
If the lights on the modem are good, can you plug a phone directly into the LJ1 jack on the back of the modem?
Do you get a Dial tone when you are plugged directly into the phone

Because comcast's phone service sucks. It's poor, drops calls and never works when you want it to.
Then you get to spend 30 minutes on the phone reporting the outage and trying to get a tech out who comes in and says he can't fix it. Then you have to call back and ask them to credit you because they can't do it when you call the first time.
I'm calling AT & T on Monday or maybe discontinuing the phone all together.

I am having the same problem and when I plug the phone directly in to telephone 1 on the modem it does work also the phone I have next to my modem works, but the other phones in the house do not That little plastic piece that fits in to the phone jack with one line to the modem and one line to the phone in that room is
very loose fitting. could that be the problem'

A loose fitting splitter is provably the problem.
Splitter could be bad or you could have a bad jack.
New splitter available at Places like Bestbuy or Radio Shack.
Might try putting a light strain on the splitter to see if you can find a position that works.

I had an appointment for a technician to come because I have no service on my land line. He was supposed to be here no later than 10:30 a.m. It's now 11:30 a.m. I tried calling the company, but as the phone I was calling on is not on my account, (duh) I'm not getting a call back. I'm ready to go back to AT&T. In the 55 years I had them, I had three service calls.

When you call from a different phone, you should be asked to input the phone number associated with your account.

I finally got it fixed. I was told that the reason the technician didn't come was that they called me twice on my land line and I didn't answer so it was assumed I wasn't home. I had left my cell phone # because my land line wasn't working so naturally I didn't answer it because it wasn't ringing. DUH !!! That was the reason I wanted a technician. I hope I don't have to call your customer service too many times. I spent two hours trying to get ahold of somebody. I was really shocked when I was told the reason nobody came was because I didn't answer my non-working phone which was the reason I wanted somebody to come out. I had left my cell #, which one girl told me, "Oh, yes, we do have that number." Surprise, Surprise.
