I also often have problems with no dial tone. If I reset the modem, it will clear the problem, but when the dial tone is ratty (a fairly common problem) the modem continues to fail to detect the disconnect signal from my wireless phones and so, goodbye dial tone again. When it gets very bad I disconnect the wireless phones and just use the old plug in phone until comcast gets their noise problem fixed.
