Soon as in when? A month? Longer? Will we get an email letting us know? Until I can text as myself, I don't see the need for this app.
02-24-2012 09:56 AM
Personally, I found it easier to start a new email account and change it to my primary, but still alllow the same priveledges for my main account so that I get the important Comcast notices to the older account. Then I use the new account for texting only and use the iPhone's Mail app for my old email account. This way, I don't get a zillion notices that there is a new email on the new account.with the Xfinity app, which is used for texting. If you wish, you can get the seconary account in the Xfinity app too, but messages will only be retrieved when you open the folder for it as it becomes an "External Account" when you log in to the new account. You won't get notices of new mail on the Xfinity app for "External Accounts"

Wambo -- thanks! I didn't think of setting up a different email account and making that the primary. Great suggestion! And having it for texting only is a great idea too. I don't use my iPhone for email at all so I really wasn't looking to have those notifications anyway. Thank you so much!

It is NOT working.
I just sent a text from my husband's phone to mine.
I opened my phone to see a notification on the screen that it had been rec'd.
It NEVER rang.
I am not a mind reader, HOW are we supposed to KNOW that a text arrives if it does not RING the phone???

My makes a chime sound when I get a text message [to my Comcast home phone number] on my Xfinity app. You need to turn it on in the Xfinity app. Open the app and push the little gear at the bottom right [settings] . Then click "Notifications" and the bottom of the Notifications page, you need to turn on "Messages: Text"

Thanks, however that has been turned on right along.
I have stood holding both phones... sent the text from one to the other, to my home number and there is NO sound emitted from the receiving iPhone at all.
I have another app (Textfree) that I've been using for free text although I don't like that it uses a dedicated phone number they assign so people don't recognize it. I am keeping it because it supports pictures. THAT app RINGS my phone whenever I get a text message. WHY can't or doesn't the Xfinity app do that? With all the money behind Xfinity I would expect their app to work.
I have a website that reviews apps... this one isn't getting very many stars so far... all I want it to do is RING when a text is received, I don't think that is too much to ask from a tech company's app.

We use TextFree too, but you cannot be logged on two different Devices with the same account. My wife wanted to start using her iPad with it too, but she doesn't need to carry it all the time. Once logged on to her TextFree account on the iPad, she's is then automactically logged off her iPhone. I then tried forwarding to her email to use the TextFree web interface, but it uses Flash and will not work on iDevices. That's why I tried Xfinity, but we really aren't using ot yet. I'm just testing it because it seems like a good compromise.
Now, my app still chimes when a text message is received on the iPhone, and it will even forward to email. The notification that I'm referring to, is in the settings in the Xfinity app, not in the iPhone or Ipad settings. I just wanted to make sure that you have the correct one turned on. If you do, then also make sure that they are all turned on in "Notification Center" in the iPhone [or iPad] main Setting too, and choose "Alerts" in the "Alert Style" area/picture. I have "Badge App Icon, Sound and View in Lock Screen turned on in the iPhone Settings too. Let me know your result.

OMG!
I was just sitting here and TWO, yes 2 hours AFTER I sent a text from my husband's phone to mine (that has the Xfinity mobile app installed) it JUST now chimed!
ONCE! Really? I am going to notice that? And TWO hours LATE??? Text are supposed to be instantaneous, not TWO hours later! What good is that? By then whatever I was being texted about is a moot point!
So now I have to go figure out if there is a way to make the little chime, which I am not going to notice when my iPhone is buried in my purse or sitting out on my kitchen counter being charged, into something that will be annoying enough to actually hear.
Comcast/Xfinity rep:
Can you please tell me WHY it took TWO (2) hours for a text to arrive???
Is there some way to make that tiny chime into a LOUDER RING???
ALSO if Textfree app for texts can make my iPhone actually RING why can't the Xfininity Mobile app???
Thanks!
Maggie

Please be advised that texting with the Xfinity app is not really free. If you send texts out over your wireless provider's 3 or 4G network, you will still be charged according to whatever your plan, regardless of whether you use the app that comes on your phone or the Xfinity app.
I do not have a texting plan with AT&T, but was charged .20 per message by AT&T that i sent out on Xfinity. So if you want to use the Xfinity App for convenience sake, that's one thing. But don't cancel your texting plan from your carrier; you'll be charged by the message that you send out using the Xfinity App.
02-25-2012 02:21 PM
TextFree and all the other apps can do that too, Mag. In fact, sometimes I get an error that Textfree servers are "too busy, try later" and my message isn't sent. If you both have an iDevice, and are using iOS 5, then you can send free messages using the stock Messages app. TYou just need to enable iMessage in settings [it is enabled by default]. If you see the wods 'iMessage' in the text area before you start typing, then it's free. This works with all iOS 5 iDevices and even with different networks. I have friends the send me free SMS from Europe, since they use iOS 5 and iPods, phone or iPads.

Thanks for the info Bill, however unfortunately my husband's cell phone service is paid for by the company he works for and they insist on AT&T...while I won't leave Verizon b/c their reception is 100% better where we live. On top of that my kids both use Androids and different cell providers.
So I am the odd man out, I am the only one that doesn't have texting on her cell service b/c I simply don't use it that much... I thought this would be a nice alternative but it's not ending up as very good.
I know what you mean about Textfree's servers. That didn't happen at first but the more that use it the more often I get that message. That being said my grown kids text ALL the time and theirs are ALWAYS instantaneous! That's how they should be.
02-25-2012 04:35 PM
I agree. I even think that TextFree oughta be flawless. Those who paid for it deserve it, and the rest of us are making TextFree money because of the iAds, so we deserve it too.
When my oldest finally gets a phone, we'll all use ATT and we'll need unlimited family SMS, but until then, we're all in the same boat...and it sometimes doesn't float real well.

I try to send a text message from the web and from the iphone app but it tells me that the message could not be send because it could not communicate with the server. How do I get this fixed?

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app already. Any advice please?
I am having this same exact problem for weeks now. I have no problem using the apps for my e-mail or voicemails, but the texting service just refuses to work for me.
I have reinstalled the app on both my iPhone and iPad, logged out of both of them at the same time, etc.
I sometimes get the message that "Text service has already been set up on this account. Please log out and try again."
I have tried signing up for the text messaging service numerous times over the past 3-4 weeks. I have tried through the iPhone app, the iPad app, and through Xfinity Connect. I have also deleted the apps on both devices and reinstalled several times. Nothing works to get me set up with the text messaging service. Sorry.
Can I get any additional help with this problem, or should I just forget you offer texting service? Nothing is working on the web interface, iPhone, or iPad.

In the Settings app, go to "Notifications". That's where you'll find the Xfinity app in the Notification Center area.
03-04-2012 08:42 PM
Thanks for the suggestion, but that is my problem. Under "settings", "notifications" and under "notification center" there is no xfinity mobile app. There is "reminders", "calendar", "game center", "facebook", "mail" and "messages" and that is it. Under "messages" the alerts are on but I believe that this alert is for imessage not my texting. However the app is on the ipad and I can access it by clicking on the icon on the "desk top".
If I look down the "settings" list further under "apps" it shows "facebook", "ibooks" and "xfinity TV" but no Xfinity mobile there either. Do I perhaps need to reinstall the app?
03-04-2012 09:20 PM
Yes would. It is definitely missing on your iPad, becuase that's exactly where I found it. [ Under "settings", "notifications" and under "notification center"...I checked after I read your question]. Also, Power off and on. I may work.

I have the same problem. I have "Text Notification " ON and have my ringtone checked, but I hear NOTHING when a text is received. This feature worked erratically in the past but does not work now.
03-07-2012 04:35 PM
That essentially makes the app worthless.
If Textfree and other texting apps can make my iPhone ring why can't a huge company like Comcast?
03-07-2012 04:44 PM
I agree that the app is worthless if my ringtone is ignored. If Comcast fails to fix this problem within a week I will have to reactivate texting via Verizon.
03-07-2012 04:57 PM
Don't even bother. Your service providers (ATT, Verizon) will charge you for the Comcast texts if you send them out over a 3 or 4 G network. I got charged for all of the Comcast texts that I sent by my service provider. Since the app basically doesn't work anyway AND you have to pay for it, what's the point??

Hi everyone, I'm going to lock this thread since its gotten very long. If you have a question or issue about text messaging, please first search to see if someone else has already asked it. If you can't find the answer you're looking for, then please post a new topic on this board, which will make it easier for us to track and respond to each customer.
thanks.

When will the app be updated to allow secodary users with unrestricted access to use the text feature?
03-24-2012 11:39 PM
When will the app be made functional by making the phone RING to let me know when I RECEIVE a text message? We aren't using it because without this feature (that is available in other text-free apps) it is pretty useless.
03-25-2012 07:51 AM
Give up. Comcast put out and hyped the product before it was functional. It made those of us who trusted Comcast and told our contacts to switch phone numbers look like fools.
If you expect Comcast to respond to your question or even acknowledge there is a problem you have a long wait ahead.
03-25-2012 10:30 AM
Jules you are entrirely correct.
I own a site that reviews iOS apps and this one would get ONE STAR if I even wanted to bother reviewing it! It will not notify the user by ringing the phone when a text arrives and more importantly they released it with NO support and are ignoring their own customers when questions are asked.
03-30-2012 07:29 AM
This is pretty cool. I've been using etherSMS on my iPad for a while and they're coming out with MMS/pictures this month. Don't know that I can wait until next year.
04-03-2012 02:42 PM
Much like the "universal" caller ID,the text messaging service doesn't work for me. And why make an app for both apple and android but limit streaming to only the apple products? I really miss Verizon FiOS,heck, even Direct TV never had me in contact with customer service as much as Comcast has.
04-03-2012 03:53 PM
I am using the Xfinity mobile app on my Iphone 4s. I can send a text message from my Iphone to my Xfinity home phone number. It does show up in the Xfinity mobile app under text messages, and it does indeed notify me with a ring tone on my Iphone. It works every single time.
04-03-2012 06:22 PM
It actually RINGS your iPhone like normal text messages or it just chimes once as a notification alert???
Mine will chime one time if I am lucky and if my phone is in my purse it will never be heard.

How are you controlling repeated notification alerts for a text? My iPhone 4 will only play one alert tone for the Verizon text and that's it... if it's in my purse or I have my phone on vibrate in a meeting I have no idea that it ever happened... it is just exasperating. With the Textfree text app it RINGS the phone until I answer so I know that I have a text. If you can tell me how you are making it send you repeated alert signals for a Verizon text I would appreciate learning how to do that.
Thanks!

Okay, It says you can TEXT from PC. HOW do I download that app to my PC?
04-09-2012 04:02 PM
There is no PC app. You just compose the text from Xfinity emai/Voice/text in your browser using the tab for "Text Messaging", which is near the email tab.. My tab was between Calendar and Prferences

b1jhonny - are you signed up in your device using your primary user ID ? Where did you sign up from? If you signed up from the mobile app and you got a confirmation you should be able to do text messaging. Make sure you are using the primary account ID. If the problem still persists call 1-800-COMCAST and have a ticket opened.

Mageebee - I read all your threads and here is a solution. Before you go ahead and apply these changes, i want to make sure you are using the latest version of the app from app store.
Steps
- Log out and log back into the application. Now go to the app settings from main menu settings - and in Push Notifications - make sure the notifications are ON - and Messages : Text is set to ON. If required turn everything OFF and turn it back ON and update by tapping the update button.
- Get out of the app and now go to your iPhone settings under Notifications > Make sure the Xfinity Mobile app is showing in the 'In Notification Center' . Tap on the Xfinity mobile and Make sure Notifcation center is ON, Alert Style is either 'Banners' or ' Alerts'. Sounds is ON, View in lock screen is ON.
Once you make sure all the above is taken care, now send a message from your iPhone to your Xfinity number and see if you get an alert.
If this is still not working send me your comcast.net ID and your number on kchahal@comcast.net and i will have soemone look into wether you are getting notifications also.
