Analog picture frozen on one channel

I have a couple of old ReplayTV DVRs connected directly to my cable, with no cable box. These are analog-only cable-ready devices, so they can only tune the local channels, which are still being sent in both analog and digital formats (we're supposed to lose analog in a week or so, and I got a DTA, but I have a signal issue that's preventing the DTA from tuning these channels).

This has been working fine, until last night. When I tried to record CSI: Miami, the entire recording just had a single still frame and no sound.  And when I tune to the channel now (15 hours later), it's still stuck on that frame (Wolfe talking to Horatio). At first I thought it might have been something screwed up with the DVR, but it's on both DVRs. It's only happening on that one channel (channel 4, Boston WBZ), the other channels are fine. What's weird is that the recording started at 10pm, but the frame it's stuck on is not from the beginning of the show.

I did an online chat with Comcast this morning -- she wanted me to disconnect and reconnect things, make sure that cable connections are tight. I appeased her, but knew it was a waste of time. There's no way that a connection problem could cause symptoms like this -- it can cause a poor image and breakup, but not a perfectly clear picture that just doesn't change for hours.  She said she'd forward the report to technicians.  It's been 6 hours, it's still stuck.

Has anyone ever seen something like this before? Could it be related to the fact that they're discontinuous analog next week?

There is no box, the cable plugs directly into the ReplayTVs.

And when I thought it might have been the DVR that was stuck, I tried rebooting it.

Re: Analog picture frozen on one channel

you said in your post you went and got a dta, I assumed you hooked it up and that was your issue.  Have you unplugged the cable from the replay tv and put it directly into the tv to see if anything comes in?  When you put the dta on the box the replay tv is not going to do much anymore as the cable box and the replay tv will have to be on the same channel to record anything.

Have you unplugged the replay tv to reset that.

Re: Analog picture frozen on one channel

I got a DTA, but it doesn't work because of the signal issue. Also, I had to purchase an IR Blaster from eBay (so the ReplayTV can change the channel on the DTA), and I'm waiting for this to be delivered.  So until both of these issues are resolved, I'm still using the direct connection.

As I said, I rebooted the ReplayTV, it didn't help.  The second ReplayTV never did anything with channel 4 last night, yet it's stuck on the exact same image. I can change the channel on them, but when I go back to channel 4 they're back to that same frame.

I've had these devices for about 10 years, and been a regular reader of the AVS Forum devoted to them, and I've never heard of them having this failure mode. All the symptoms point to a problem at the Comcast end of the cable, not my end.

Re: Analog picture frozen on one channel

Looks like they've done something. I just checked again, and it's still stuck, but now on a frame from what looks like an afternoon talk show.

Re: Analog picture frozen on one channel

About an hour after I posted that last message, I checked again, and it had again changed to being frozen on Judge Judy, where it's been stuck since then. So all my scheduled recordings for tonight (How I Met Your Mother through Hawaii 5-0) will be of her face (it caught her in mid-scream).

I just did another online chat with Comcast. He said this may be due to the digital conversion. But the letter I got said that this would be on April 17. Could they really have started shutting down analog channels over a week in advance?

Hopefully I'll be able to get all the shows tomorrow from On Demand, and on Wednesday the tech will hopefully fix the digital versions of these channels so the DTA works.

I have seen that same thing here in MN. Our Limited Basic is still analog feed and have seen that on channels once in a while. We are also supposed to go all digital, no time frame however, but started seeing that same issue after the first phase of the internal digital migration. One time had 3 channels freeze. Didn't check them for a day and the next time I looked they were all working.

I don't even bother trying to record anything via my DVD recorder or VCR becasue I never trust the channel to be up. And I get it on tvs that don't have any boxes connected to them.

The latest issue has been on the tvs without boxes sometimes I lose a channel but it is available via the SD box I have. Figure it is something they are working on.

Re: Analog picture frozen on one channel

My guess is that they were working on it during the afternoon, which is why the program it was stuck on changed. Then 5pm came and they went home for the evening, so I'm stuck for tonight.

Luckily, I have a decent backlog of recordings that I haven't watched yet.

[ Edited ]

It's fixed now. Of course, Comcast never contacted me to let me know it was fixed, or what the problem was.

Unfortunately, the only CBS Monday shows that are available online or On Demand are 2.5 Men and Hawaii 5-0. So no HIMYM, 2 Broke Girls, or Mike & Molly for me this week, and I really like those shows.
