I'll program the cable box, a Motorola, to change channels at certain times. But it won't change the channel. This really screws me up, as I spend all day looking forward to the two chows that I like to record, but it will only record the channel that I leave the cable box on. I don't have a DVR. I tried setting a reminder, but all that did was say that it was set up to record a certain channel. I tried programming a normal recording, which is supposed to change to a certain channel at a certain time....but it doesn't.

I'm confused.  If you don't have a DVR how do you expect to record shows???

Your cable box must be the DVR version to be able to record shows.

Perhaps he is like me and still uses VCRs -

He might have his cable box feeding a DVD/VCR recorder, so he is setting the Comcast box to change to a specific show so the recorder and do its thing.  What Comcast box are you using?  Best bet is probably to return the box to Comcast for a new one (actually a well used one)?
